After the first round ? That's the only one anyone gave him. And that was the result of a KD delivered by a forearm (illegal). Prime Jones would IMO have beaten Calzaghe and this was past prime Jones. However, he was still a top five contender with all the alphabets and with RING when Joe beat him. That's just a measure of how great Roy was at prime. I would have preferred to see Joe fight Dawson, a fifyty fifty fight. But the fans and the media wanted to see the $$$$-generating Jones.
Calzaghe dominated Jones with ease after the 1st round. Jones had been shot to **** for years. The fight was a joke from the minute it was announced, and it proved to be so on the night. This fight represented everything that is ugly about this sport. If only fans en masse had better knowledge and more integrity, we would have spared the freakshow of Joe dancing around laughing while a man he said was shot in 2004 tried to avoid humiliation, and inevitably failed. Thank Christ my own favourite fighters would not pull this sort of shameful ****. Thank Christ indeed.
Not sure what your point is here, Dinamita. We both agree that Roy was past prime and that prime Roy would have beaten Joe. That said, a majority of boxing fans in an ESB poll taken after Calzaghe-Hopkins, wanted to see this fight more than a Calzaghe-Pavlik fight. All three commentators at HBO (Lampley, Merchant and Manny Steward) called for the fight right after the BHOP-Calzaghe decision was announced. Jones wanted the fight, badly. It was the biggest fight out there for Jones. It was certainly no worse than the freakshow of Tito-Jones. And boxers have been known to fight opponents they denigrated before. No serious boxing fan puts much stock in the result, given Roy's stage in career. And the taunting and showboating were mostly playful banter between two buddies. Roy used to do the same thing.
When you can`t even spell the 5 letter name of the country of the guy you`re talking about you have a credibility problem.
Here is a little example of what you were banned for the last time: I'm counting down the minutes till you lose your cool, reveal your disgusting self again, and get your marching orders for the second time! :good
My point is that Joe said in his autobiography in 2004 that the wins that Tarver and Johnson had over Jones were worthless because Jones was shot. I think fighting a man who has been shot for years is shameful. That's my point.
I havent read any posts yet, Im about to do so right now.... but judging by the thread title, I already know what Im gonna read... oh well, lets get the fun started.
not the most overrated but definitely overrated, in my opinion oscar de la hoya is the most overrated fighter.
I honestly don't see how someone who polarises opinion as much as Calzaghe does can seriously be regarded as the most overrated fighter ever.
This is true, plenty of people hate Calzaghe - in fact its often pretty 50-50. Definately not the most overrated.
