I seen a lot of threads around the forum with very forth right views on why a fighter is going to win a fight and how you feel the fight will go. What i have noticed is that everyone seems to see fights a different way and look and predict with different methods. How and When do you make a prediction for a fight??? Do you see a training clip and see the fighter in great shape then make a call...do you analyze records?? do you analyze previous fights and make calls from a tactical point of view?? or maybe you pick a fighter when you see them on the scales at the weigh in?? or what a lot of fight fans go on and that's body language and intensity at press conferences? :bbb
I look at the two respective styles (if I know both fighters fairly well), assess their attributes and weaknesses and then hypothetically imagine how the fight will unfold in my head. Almost as good as seeing it on telly. I should imagine the majority of others do this as well.
I'm the same i sit there and think about how styles mix. The other day i did get one thing right about the Bradley Campbell fight...i felt heads would clash because Bradley has ability to throw head about when throwing shots. I sometimes over think about styles and we can't predict how a fighter is going to be that night and some fighters have different game plans for different fights etc. I've started reading alot into fighters comments and what they say about training camp.
I break down both fighters look at there strengths and weaknesses in great detail. i then look at their opponents see if they have fought anyone similar or common opponents. Then i reach a conclusion. Sometimes i just get a gut feeling thought like picking Margarito for Marg vs Cotto. However im almost always wrong
Yeah, also you can assess styles other times- like B-Hop and Pavlik- and come up with a stinker like I did when they fought. That said, Hopkins pulled off something incredible and completely unpredictable in a fight for theages that night (my personal highlight of last year):yep. I like breaking down the fighters prior to a fight but that's the great thing about boxing- anything can happen when the bell rings. I thought Campbell was gonna outboss Bradley on take the fight on points; in all actuallity he seemed troubled by Bradley's power and was looking for a way out, IMO. As for comments in pre-fight pressers, I don't really pay attention TBH. If it was anything to go by then Hatton would have been P4P champ and schooled PBF over a year and a half ago. Naz was the King of pre-fight hype.
my saying is styles make fights and not resumes or past opponents, its a bit stupid to say he beat him so he should beat him. styles make fights, this is what i look at first and i only look at a fighters resume or past opposition if its similar to what they're up against and how they faired with fighters of similar attributes. There are many styles and each of these boxing styles has success against the others. In general, an in-fighter has an advantage over an out-fighter, an out-fighter has an advantage over a puncher, and a puncher has an advantage over an in-fighter these form a cycle with each style being stronger relative to one, and weaker relative to another, with none dominating, as in rock-paper-scissors. Naturally, many other factors, such as the skill level and training of the fighters, determine the outcome of a fight. Styles make fights might be cliche but its been validated many times i also take into account all the other intangibles and imponderables and btw analysing weigh-ins/body is for girls :good
Styles first then I'll have a look at boxrec to remind myself of their resume just to gauge how good they are (when I don't know the fighter). Maybe a bit of a breakdown of strengths and weaknesses but just the main ones as I'm lazy and tend not to look too deep. I never really pay attention to weigh-ins and training really, except in some extreme cases.
Last year when I took the prediction league in the General seriously I used to watch the fighters last fight, and I'd also try to track down a fight against an opponent as close as possible to their opponent in the upcoming bout. When I can't be bothered to look into a fight extensively I usually just watch a few minutes of each and picture the fight in my mind.
my old feller used to say, and these were his words not mine " always back the ******" ... worked for him till 2 black fighters came up against each other I personally back the fighter with the most corrupt promoter.
Various things.... I tend to consider recent form (basically the last two fights), recent common opponents and how each guy fares against oppo with similar styles. I have been guilty of placing too much emphasis on size when fighters move up in weight. My best picks were probably Hopkins > Pavlik, and Margarito > Cotto, which I called immediately. My worst were probably Margarito > Mosley and Hatton > Pacquiao.
