before people go hounding that this is just a pre-emptive excuse if Cotto wins, let me make it clear that it isn't. So back on topic. Pacquiao is 30 years old and he's been fighting as a pro since he was only 16 years old. He's been in countless wars. 6 years ago, when he was 24 years old, he was fighting at 122lbs... now he's fighting at 145.
i don't think he's past it.. he's now in his peak IMO and probably still have 1 or 2 more years before slipping down which we will not see because he'll retire soon so he could run for a congressional seat next election. ...hope he loses his congressional bid, so he could go back to boxing lol
The difference with Pacquiao is he is not making weight. As his body becomes more stressed and ages he is moving UP in weight, almost by the fight. His body is being allowed to grow and he is able to take proper sustanance throughout the year without killing himself on the way back. Pacquiao is in his absolute prime. His last time out was the best he has ever looked.
i thought his prime was at featherweight. Never really imagined him in the ring with Hatton, DLH and cotto!?! I even got nervous about him going to 135!
Funny... but after his fight with Solis, some people were suggesting that Pac was past his prime and did not have the desire to train hard anymore. I think he's slowed down a bit since his featherweight days but he is so much better skillwise compared to those days that even a slight diminution in speed didn't affect him as much as it should have.
Still peaking in terms of overall ability. If he is very slightly less explosive and athletic than in earlier days, you wouldn't notice it, and it is more than made up for by his constant improvement skill-wise.
I would like the people who say he is physically past his prime to explain why. He has gained weight without losing a step in terms of footspeed. He's shown no stamina issues. He hasn't lost power. What are the signs of this slight physical decline?
