Did people read this gentleman fine post? It makes it clear. Welterweight is from anything over 140 up to the LIMIT of 147. Period. This has nothing to do with whether the WBO belt is a joke, etc. etc. etc.

  2. There's one thing that makes what you say 100% correct - the fact that Cotto agreed to fight at 145lbs. I think that's what people are tripping up on.

The counter argument is that the WW limit's 147lbs, therefore Cotto should be allowed to weigh 147lbs. This would be correct, had Cotto not agreed to fight at 145lbs.

I can understand why people might not agree, I didn't at first. You just gotta remember that 1) 145lbs is considered a WW weight 2) Cotto agreed to fight at this weight.

  3. However, I disagree that is has to be for the title. It can be for the title would a be better way of putting it.

Because everybody has a say on it without actually knowing anything. A Portuguese quotation states, "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing."

Cotto did agree to the 145 limit, but never agreed to put the title on the line. That came in later when the wbo got a hard on for the fight.

Even if Pac goes up to 145 and Cotto comes in at 147, Pac will still win imo.

THAT would prove something, instead of him making Cotto chop down to a weight where he knows he's not gonna be at his best.

I think 145lbs is the right weight for the fight, my issue is that Pacman is only facing a champion who can't weigh at the limit of the division he is defending.

Cotto obviously feels Pacman shouldn't win the title with a limit inside a limit, so what should he do/have done.

Refuse to fight at the fair weight of 145lbs - then be accused of ducking
Drop his belt - then be accused of being scared of losing
Fight for the belt at 145lbs - Even if Pacman wins that doesn't mean he is a better fighter at the WW limit.

It's a shame this is taking away from what could be a great fight.

    At 145 lbs:

Cotto thinks he can win this fight...

PAC thinks he can win this one too...

So what's the problem with the title on the line?? Both think they can win the fight... Both were confident to get/keep the title...

The welterweight limit is 147. This fight is at 145, so it is not a welterweight limit fight. The title should only be on the line if the fighters are aloud to go up to the full 147. Whether they have agreed it or not. The divisions are there for a reason.

There is no such thing as a WW limit fight. It's either a WW fight or it isn't. The weight limit is there to prevent any fighter from fighting over a prescribed weight. It is not there to stop fighters from fighting below a prescribed weight. So even if both fighters agreed to fight at 141 lbs., it would still be a Welterweight fight. The speed limit on most highways in Pennsylvania is 55 MPH. That doesn't mean that you can't legally drive below 55 MPH on those roads. The same basic logic applies here.

Put aside the fact that Cotto agreed to fight at 145, does anyone feel Pac deserves to win the welterweight title after limiting Cotto to only weighing 145? On principle I feel if you want the belt, forget the catchweight. Thats just my opinion, but i think this thread may go on and on for while......
