Now I am loving the idea of the tournament but a problem I see in it is if one of the fighters manages to go undefeated throughout the tournament the super-middleweight division wont be as deep as it was before the tournament and there wont be as many high profile fights,ok you have Bute and Green and maybe Andrade and Bika but thats really it. Now I know they wont all fight each other but I think it could be a problem when the tournament is over.
thats not a problem, if a fighter goes undefeated in this tournament he will be a real superstar and he can unify against Bute or really challenge himself by going up in weight to achieve greatness in another division. One fighter being amazing does not make the other ones ****. the division will still be deep because its full of guys with lots of ability.
I don't see your point at all... the other guys don't just retire because they have a loss or two to quality opponents. It's thinking like this that prevents good fights, that a loss is career-ending or should define your limits forever. My problem with the tourney is the 3pts for ko, 2 pts for decision win. I know they consider that a fan-friendly way to go but if someone loses out in some way due to a hard-fought points win while someone else gains because a guy quits due to injury, it won't look good.
I see your point bt for some reason I cant see the lkes of Taylor and Froch continuing if they have a bad tournament especially Taylor. What im saying the eventual winner wont go over old ground by beating some people he's beaten already but I do see your point.
I don't see a problem here. There is the potential for the tourney winner to be in his biggest fight ever AFTER the tournament. Bute/Andrade: Bute gets another decision. Pavlik/Williams: Pavlik puts Williams away. Bute/Pavlik next year. Winner unfies with Balzsay. Winner fights tourney winner, and that is HUGE.
I agree with you, you need losers to have winners. Some fighters get a lot of respect after they lose.
I'm in agreement with this guy. Can i just say also with all due respect to the original poster, with all the complaints about fighters avoiding the big fights that are out there. How can the fact that these guys are going in with the best contenders in the division be a problem? Regardless of what fights cant be made after the tournament, they will have already been made? its like saying that the Pac Vs. Hatton fight should have never happened because it cant be made again? Plus the guy who wins this tournament will be widely regarded as the best super-middleweight in the world, and possibly get the biggest fights at light heavy also if he feels he can do that move.
In a literal sense your right. Putting Williams somewhere will be up to the ringside doctor, EMT's, and ambulance driver.
No problem mate... One one SMW champ should be back in the end. The winner of the tournament gets out with 2 belts (wba & wbc). In the meantime Bute unifies with wbo - he wins ofcourse. Winner of tournament against Bute... Dream fight... We don't need all this belts - we need only 1 champ.............. MIKKEL KESSLER ....
If one SMW cleans out the tournament, they can just do another one (or the same tournament over) with a few of the "elite" talents thrown in. Basically the champ "defends" his title against a new class. Basically if ONE dude clears it out, he has a ready made fight against Bute or Pavlik if need be.
