Watching Beyond the Glory Oscar seemed like a real depressive dude, dont get me wrong after losing his mum when he was so young its bound to have an effect not to mention he was on the way to superstardom but it just seems all the money he made and personal success he enjoyed as a fighter never really made him happy.
Alot of people are super competitive by nature to mask some other vulnerable areas in their lives. I don't think this is the case for all boxers but I've always thought this about Hoya.
I feel this way about Roy Jones. I met him a few years ago and I came away thinking two things: First, he's a really good guy. Two, he seems really sad. Fighters have very fragile egos and most come from dysfunctional backgrounds. They are by nature extremely insecure. I've always believed that there is a thin line between arrogance and insecurity. When an insecure person achieves success, they often cross the thin line and become arrogant, but at the core they are always insecure. Insecurity is a much more consistent state of being than arrogance.
you've hit the nail on the head. its a great rush testing yourself physically and feeling like you've got the edge over everyone else, but thats exactly the shortcomings of rockstars too....guys like michael hutchence and kurt cobain were never happy with who they were - because having material and physical domination (even though thats bloody important in shaping who you are) isnt going to gratify anyone unless they have spiritual peace as well. you know tolkein refers to men being weak but being capable of great things in 'lord of the rings', and this is EXACTLY what he means. men are easily corrupted and they are weak by nature - but they are also capable of things they dont believe themselves. if any of you have seen 'man on wire?', the story of phillipe petit, then you'll know what i'm talking about. if you dont get it out on dvd tomorrow. gandhi is the same example if you TRULY understand how, like petit(different context), men like this can live life for the 'bigger picture' and understand that you have to die someday. the nemesis of these guys are leeches like jerry springer....but anyway. i'm not one of these guys i talk about, but the examples i'm giving are trying to reflect that trying to be 'successful' materially and physically alone is going to make you unhappy. and most people who are smart enough, or just talented enough to conquer these first two...are also smart enough to realise the last part they are missing...but dont know where to find it. you know its true that women are different from men...and its because they are more in touch with their spiritual being than men are. its also the key to winning them, and because thats so important in developing who we are as people....it make sthis argument come full circle and THATS what makes it so hard for men to find themselves..truly. it also makes it ironic that the one thing women have undeniably over men is the one thing men miss that can make them happy with who they are...if they've lived before that. **** i wan't planning to get this philosophical.
has alot to do with his relationship with his dad, his mom dying young there was never any real affection in his household, the family never talked DLH'S mom and pop never told their kids they loved em ever, even though they did. This had an effect on DLH. Years of therapy and being married to Millie have eased some of the pain lucky *******.
I think some people may forget Oscar, Roy and the such are just normal people, away from the media and ring, and like normal people have issues. I think it has little to do with their status as superstars and more the fact that lots of people are depressed and lost.
To add to that, personally, I'd rather have the money and fame on top of being depressed rather than depressed with no money like the rest of us. lol
Agreed. Women are not more intelligent than men (generally speaking), but they are generally more right brained and open to metaphysical/spiritual related things than most men are. They can, however, be very gullible at times and easily lead (a perfect example would be how successful Oprah Winfrey has been at putting a spell on them I am left handed and I'd like to think I have a cosmic consciousness which puts me in the minority of men and women (not to brag). Fighters are very much like comedians. I used to do stand-up and met many comics who had very similar backgrounds to boxers. Most comics and boxers come from very dysfunctional backgrounds and are fraught with pain. Ironically enough, the word for the part of a joke that represents the apex has the word "punch" in it (punchline). We can continue this discussion privately if you wish.
