Some argue that a fighter is "Great" because they have gone through career undefeated, with some timley wins.. Others may argue that a fighter has had several defeats, got up off the canvas in some tough contests and won....and that is what makes him "Great" What are your thoughts... What makes a fighter "Great"?....:think Who are your "Great" fighters?....:think
Level of oppostion and their performances against that opposition. Longeivity also helps but isn't essentail IMHO.
Promoters. Argue it all you like but it's true, IMO. Potential is one thing- getting someone to market it is another.
What makes a fighter great? For me it's talent, heart and attitude. The fighters I think are great are Israel Vasquez, Marco Antonio Barerra and Bernard Dunne.
"Champions aren't made in gyms, champions are made from something they have deep inside them - a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill." Muhammad Ali
I agree... the great Cus D'Amato said something very similar...." You have gotta build will more than skill, I am not a creator, I just discover and uncover " :yep
'90% of training for a fight is mental with 10% physical' Mike Tyson This ties into what it means to be a great fighter. You have to be willing to take that extra mile or do those extra rounds in the gym.
heart. The ability to be on the brink but rescue the fight and keep going no matter what. Every great has that in them. But to be defined as great as GazOC says + achievements.
Cus D'Amato/Kevin Rooney actually; they said that to Tyson (Boxing's Greatest Knockouts) Greatness is in an intangible, that has many a different measurement, depending on the individual. So as such, there is no right or wrong to greatness; just different standards. But you can be sure, that when you have seen greatness, you will understand it, and have a standard yourself....
