We have a lot of debates about: Who was the best pound 4 pound fighter of all time? Who was the greatest heavyweight of all time? Who was the greatest middleweight of all time? etc etc. A couple of years ago in Britain the BBC organised an event to decide who was the greatest British historical figure of all time. Celebrities and politicians were invited to present a case for the person who they thought deserved the honour in a 30 minute programe slots. After the programes were shown there was a public poll. The idea What if we set up similar debates and selected one poster to present an article arguing the case for each fighter who was an obvious contender for the honour in question? We would try to select a poster who genuinely believed the case they were presenting and not make it a debating exercise. In the case of the pound for pound issue you could get a superior article from sombody arguing for Fitzsimmons, Langford, Greb, Pep, Armstrong Robinson, and perhaps sombody like Mayweather.
My god; they started this, with Who's the Greatest? from the 80s. The beauty of these debates is you will never get a definitive answer! And that, IMO, is the way it should always be!
Yes but wouldnt it be good for everyone to see a top poster on this site present a detailed written article for "fighter A" being the best heavyweight of all time..........
OK. I see where you coming from. It could work, if they try and pick someone that they may not necessarily rate as high as others, so they expand their minds.
OK guys here is what we have to do: When we have decided on a topic we start a thread inviting other posters to volunteer to write articles arguing the case for the fighter of their choice. We select a few of the best offers. Might be an idea to wait until the curent tournaments are out of the way or significantly nerrowed down. If a four or more good posters offer to write articles then we invite the posters to submit their articles to one of us by a given date then put them up on the site a day or so later and perhaps archive them. If we put up a thread asking posters to offer articles arguing "fighter X was the greatest lightweight of all time" for example then I am guessing that we would get good offers for Joe Gans, Benny Leonard, Henry Armstrong and Roberto Duran at least. If one of the articles was of exceptional quality it might significantly shift the consensus on this site. I do think that there have been cases in the past where a single poster has significantly improved the standing of a given fighter on this site.
Happens all the time. Quite a lot of guys in general had Holman Williams in their top 10 MW lists about a year ago "With great power comes great responsibility."
P4P #1 is a decent place to start. I think you could get good articles on Greb, Robinson, Langford, Armstrong and Fitzsimmons on the board.
I would like to see something unique or different. Something a bit fresh, maybe covering the intangible things in boxing rather than the Greatest HW of all time or P4P fighter ever. Everything in its own right is mostly subjective and in this case you could cover a subject about fighters with the most fortitude, biggest hearts, most determined, biggest overachievers, biggest underachievers, etc. Rather than sticking to the constant routine ranking of this or that. Just a thought...
