Totally agreed. I was disgusted and unamused with Hopkins for his remarks before the fight, as well as his performance during the fight. I wasn't about to penalize him for it though. Hopkins clearly won on clean and effective punching, and even sacks like Dan Rafael, Kevin Iole, the BBC, and the Associated Press well knew it, among others. This isn't the amateurs, you don't get credit for moving your arms in the air. This is professional prizefighting. Even Roy Jones publicly stated the judges took it from Hopkins for the his pre-fight remarks - but then again Roy knows what everyone else in the community knows. You don't say some **** like that.
Maybe you're right about the fight itself, I mean I was excited for it and even my dad was sitting down with me to watch it because he saw the countdown special. He said, "These are the best guys in the world." I think I need to watch it again because for all I know, my boredom and annoyance with Hopkins may have slanted my view. But I don't think it was racial in the scoring, I mean, didn't one judge have it for Hopkins?
Yes, and that judge was African American. It didn't seem racial to me either, but I've heard some rumors I won't repeat on an internet boxing forum, and I heard them from a deeply respected prominent "White figure" in the community. I haven't heard any Black people claim it was racial. That doesn't mean it wasn't. It was Hopkins who made it racial though. There's zero confusion about that, and I thought it was pretty vindictive of Roy Jones to say anything. Justice is justice. They all need to cut the ****.
There are showmen and there are showmen. Chris Eubank is the latter. I'd put him in the HOF on the basis of him saying "parliamentary procedure."
Eubank was a consumate eccentric. It was brilliant though. I used to love the way he'd hold one mitt above the other at the end of bout. He was a great character. And great characters in boxing need to be on terrestrial TV.
