the holyfield of 87-92 gets destroyed against 88 tyson because he couldnt avoid or handle exchanges in the right way. it would be a great fight for a few rounds until tyson connects with a bomb and believe me mike finsihes it. there would be no repeat of bowe 1 or bert cooper But the 1993 Holyfield under manny is a different proposition. he was more composed and discplined. i really see it being a close fight with tyson coming on strong late to finish or get a verdict isnt it funny how both fighters were never every anywhere near there best after there best performances.
But we don't know that Holyfield wouldn't have become disciplined against a Tyson of 88. In fact, he may have far respected Tyson and his explosiveness. Tyson was the new "invincible" and I feel Holyfield might've had the chance to keep his discipline. Either way this is a 93 version as you say. I'll pick Holyfield.
!993 Holyfield against 1988 Tyson? I would bet on Holyfield. More times than not, Holyfield would win by late stoppage or decision...in my opinion. :bbb
I'd pick Holyfield against Tyson 10/10. He had the mental toughness to withstand Mike, something many of his victims lacked. Tyson and King picked Evander because they believed he was shot - something they no doubt regretted.
This is one of those fights like prime ali vs prime tysons. or prime holmes vs prime ali . tough call. Holyfield only fought two fights in 93 vs stewart and vs bowe . Both were wins by dec. Tyson mowed over spinks. I say tyson wins but Holyfield makes a better fight out of it than Spinks did. rd 5 ko Tyson.
Allowing for accidents, I agree. Holyfield was the wrong man. And he was assured of his ability to beat Mike Tyson forever.
Holyfield became a disciplined fighter because of his trainer Tommy Brooks in the Tyson fights. Emanuel Steward prepared Holyfield for Bowe in the second fight. These are two very good strategist trainers who forced Holy to fight a certain way to take advantage of his opponents weaknesses. If you really analyze the fights they were very out of character of the Lou Duva George Benton trained Holyfield that was more apt to brawl. I dont think Holyfield would have ever beat that version of Tyson but certainly not the 1993 version of Holyfield.
imn talking about the tyson who never relied on intimidation to win. the tyson of 88 was a different proposition to the man of 89 and onwards
I hate the myth of intimidation with Tyson. Many fighters are scared to enter the ring for some reason or another. Tyson was physically smaller, talked like a ***** and wasnt a snarling bully before his fights like some of the other so called intimidators. The fear was caused by what he did to fighters and how much better he was than his opponents. If you want to call that intimidation, Im sure every other dominant champion experienced the same thing.
Tyson was winning the first 5 past his prime and he hurt Holy pretty bad at one stage from what I remember. In his prime Holy may have not made it out of those early rounds, if he does I think he hangs on to make the later rounds competitive while still losing out a very clear decision
I pick Tyson. Tyson v Holyfield I is one of my all time favourite fights even though I'm a Tyson fan. I watch that fight every now and again, Mike Tyson just relied on raw power and bullness to KO Holy early. He came out throwing bombs with a right hand which he missed 80% of them in the first 3 rounds. Holyfield though showed great defensice maneuvres. But This was agaisnt Tyson who had no head movement and desire to show some skills he's been taught. He just wanted to do to Holy what he did to Bruno. Get in there and throw bombs and brake him down mentally. Big mistake agaisnt Holyfield. Tyson tired quick and agaisnt Holyfield dirty tactics he got frusturated eveb more. We did see the prime Tyson but too bad it was only for 30 seconds in the 5th round. Tyson of the Spinks fight would be too much for any version of Holyfield.
What you are forgetting is that a young, motivated Tyson had the mental toughness to go the distance as well....and still be very explosive in the final rounds (see Tyson/Ribalta). Once things got easy for Tyson, and he was at the top, everyone told him he was invincible, he started to rely on his talent alone---which was considerable enough to keep him winning for a while. But hard work ALWAYS beats talent alone. This made a later Tyson feel threatened when someone started to give him a hard time, because he believed he couldn't be challenged, and so a tough fight would get to him mentally and he gave up. I see a prime Tyson knocking Holyfield out, or if Holyfield's incredible chin and heart holds up, Tyson out pointing him.
I rank Tyson quite a bit above Holyfield in my top 10-15 list but Evander has the neccessary strengths, mindset etc. to make things difficult for any version of Mike. I pick Tyson here though. Unlike post prison Tyson who lacked the stamina, and simple will to win, the Tyson that fought Spinks, Holmes, Biggs was a well conditioned and tough fighter. The beating that Douglas had to give Tyson before he fell was insane, Tyson was not mentally weak like many people believe and could fight for 12 rounds at a good pace. Holyfield beat Tyson by tiring him out, he wouldn't be able to do that here against an 87-88 Tyson and Tysons body attack would slow Holyfield down considerably and he'd be finished around the 10th round.
I wouldn't hesitate whatsoever to favour Holy over any post Douglas version of Tyson, but the Tyson from '87-'88 is a whole different proposition, as suited as Holyfield is to beating him I don't think the '93 Holy was discipplined and shrewd enough to pull it off. I think I'd favour Tyson of the Spinks fight by late TKO or decision in this case.
Holyfield's initial bout with Tyson was most impressive especially when contrasted with Bruce Seldon's pathetic fright induced faint job just previously. However, it must be remembered that the great shattering of Tyson's invincibility was already accomplished by Douglas, so it wasn't the earth-shaking event that it could have been when Holyfield topped Tyson. It just reinforced Mike's fall from grace.
