No my friend, I'm sorry but it cannot be cured. I myself have the opposite condition, known as 'Non-Fanboy Rational Realism', which means that even though Manny Pacquiao is my favourite current fighter, I am still aware that he is not an elite fighter.

There is not yet a remedy for your disease. Sorry. :hi:

    FYI....

If ELITE is THE top category here then it is the category where Robinson, Ali, Duran etc belong. You cannot have every good champion in history being in your top category, or there would be hundreds and hundreds in there and it makes a mockery of the word 'elite' and of your categories.

Some Varied Examples from Past and Present...

    ELITE
Robinson, Greb, Langford, Armstrong, Ali, Charles, Duran...

    GREAT
Leonard, Whitaker, Jones Jr, Arguello, Saddler, Sanchez, Griffith...

    VERY GOOD
Calzaghe, Winky Wright, Mosley, Tszyu, JM Marquez, Aaron Pryor, Azumah Nelson, Sonny Liston...

    GOOD
Glengoffe Johnson, Vernon Forrest, Nate Campbell, Fernando Vargas, Earnie Shavers, Ray Mancini, Ayub Kalule...

    AVERAGE
Angel Manfredy, Shannon Briggs, Micky Ward, Howard Eastman, David Diaz, Roger Mayweather, guys who never held a world title or held one alphabet very briefly, who had a good win or two but these were outnumbered by losses in big fights...

    BELOW AVERAGE
Audley Harrison: guys who maybe competed at Euro/regional level but never world title level, were therefore below the standard of the average alphabet world title challenger...

    BUM
Domestic journeymen who never made it to any title level and were used as bums to be KO'd by fighters on the way up.

By this definition, Calzaghe is VERY GOOD. And this definition is sound IMO.

It is sound, but I think he could definitely be considered 'Great', depending on who you put in each category. If you expand 'Elite' to include most of the guys you think of as 'Great', then Joe could be moved up to a 'Great'.

i'm going to suggest that anyone who says hes great or elite are brits and anyone who ranks him average or below are not being objective either.

the million dollar question will always be how good was he?

and when people discuss joe calzaghe in 10-20 years time it'll be with fantasy fights against great fighters because there are no great fighters that he fought at the time he should have.

he's an excellent fighter, but he never sought greatness and won't achieve that status as a result.

It depends on how you define elite. If Joe is then you have to have at least a hundred others in that category.

the irony i guess is that roy jones will always be remembered as an elite fighter and an ATG, and yet he ruled a weak division similarly to calzaghe.

the big, big difference of course is that jones was always on the line for big fights because of his reputation and notoriety - something that is more limiting than anything if you have a reputation but choose not to put yourself in the limelight.

Deviating from the topic but Audley Harrison is a goddamn bum if ever I saw one. He is a domestic journey man who never made it to any world title level. An Irish cab driver beat him on his way up how pathetic is that?
I think theres a case for Leonard being elite but I suppose a lack of longevity could count against him? I felt it a bit harsh putting Roger Mayweather in average but looking back through his resume in retrospect its probably right.

Well he is the best super middleweight champion of all time. The super middleweight class is/was better than people make out so I think that makes him great.
