My top 5 moments in boxing in this decade

Titos entrance in the Hopkins fight, one of my favorite entrances of all time.

 

i was watching the aftermath of the b hop fight, it was great to see him go over to pav and show a softer side.

Here are my 5 .

#5 Antonio Margarito pummels Cotto into submission (big **** storm surrounding the wraps i know !!!!) but still Cotto was the undefeated superstar Margarito was the Mexican brawler who had paid his dues and worn his man down . A modern day classic " Max Kellerman "

#4 Kostya Tzyu retires on his stool and gives Ricky Hatton the biggest win of his career and an IBF 140lb tile .

#3 Comeback complete Oscar De La Hoya rolls back the years and smashes Ricardo Mayorga and wins back the WBC 154 lb title !!!!!

#2 Deigo Corrales TKO's Jose Luis Castillo in a memorable epic for the undispuited LW title (WBC,WBO) , truly awesome moment !!!!!!

#1 for me a strange choice but im a fan of the sentimental side of the game too :

De La Hoya Pacquiao :

De La Hoya walks out to the center of the ring having just retired on his stool and the end of the 8th round to congratulate Manny Pacquiao .

Pacquiao says " you are still my hero "

De La Hoya replies " no you are mine "

I'd have Coralles Castillo Round 10 in there

 

exciting stuff and good picks again mcgrain....i'd put the gatti rally at either 1 or 2 if those were in a particular order though.

 

Two of mine actually came in the same fight.

Trinidad's entrance wearing the fire hat and chewing a piece of straw, against Hopkins.

And then despite being absolutely battered for twelves rounds, then KD, he managed to get to his feet and was ready to go again, despite barely being able to stand and having no chance of winning.

Trinidad was all heart.

 

I was gutted that night...doors were knocked off hinges, furniture was kicked repeatedly...but yes Hoya-UK Tito's greatest asset was his heart IMO..

 

Probably the same feelings I had after Hamed-Barrera. My favourite British fighters legacy moment, and he gets completly outclassed by someone I thought he would knock out.

I actually found Tito's fight with Winky more difficult to watch than against Hopkins. I don't really know why. That moment when Tito got to his feet was extraordinary though, very few modern era fighters have displayed that kind of courage and heart.

If Tito had been an *******, seeing him lose would have been easier to take. But because he seemed like a genuinely nice guy, it made it all the more painful.

 

Great picks, especially the last round of Morales - Pacquiao I. That and the opening round volleys they traded where Manny raises his hands and Morales goes through his "let's fight" act are just irrational moments of pure macho that instantly make me my heart beat faster.

The particular moment of Corrales - Castillo I I'd pick for at least honorable mention is how Goosen walks up with the mouthpiece and says "you better f*cking get inside on him". 99% of humanity at that point either waves off the fight or looks at Chico's face and starts crying, and Goosen had the sense and wherewithal to still be giving sound advice.

Two more honorable mentions for me are Teddy almost crying at the end of Ward - Augustus to give them a bigger payday, and the last minute of Toney - Jirov with Manny Steward practically having an orgasm on air. Just classic stuff.

 

Pacquiao knocking down marquez in the second fight. Marquez chooses to exchange with manny after getting up a heavy knockdown. Almost goes down again and goes to the wrong corner, the adrenaline was ridiculous their.

 

I haven't watch the Winky fight since I saw it live...I own it on DVD, and have tried to watch but I haven't made it through the second round...sad to see Tito basically being toyed with by Winky...

 

Hey man, Winky was just a nasty dude at that point. I hated seeing him do Shane that way also.

Tell you what, watch the fight, then immediately go to youtube and watch this. Should take some of the sting off of it.

I'm actually finding it difficult to think of moments. McGrain picked some good 'uns and especially the Hopkins post Pavlik press row staredown - which was ****ing awsome.

Abraham fighting with a broken jaw against Miranda count as a moment?
Most brutal fights I've seen that was. I loved Abraham's smurf hat entrance as well, although I totally forget what fight that was...in fact...was that Miranda fight :huh

(sorry el matador ) but DLH stopping Mayorga, after he had **** talked Oscar's wife was pretty great, IMO.

 

Mayorga's "I come from a land where women give birth to men" speech after Forrest I was great for a million wrong reasons. Very possibly Merchant's best post fight interview.
