I don't get the other guy comment saying Clottey never is a skilled fighter. How can a fighter that is have a tight very good defense with his guard up with quick jabs and nice counterpuncher is not skilled?
Cotto did have the cut, and showed massive heart, but he was breaking down at the end. Clottey gave him that win by not throwing enough punches. If Clottey let his hands go Cotto would have been stopped again. Cotto has been through some wars and has a lot of wear and tear now.
I just stated this in my last comment, if Clottey let his hands go Margarito like, Clottey would have stopped Cotto.
IS funny how ATLAS & a lot of other people in this sport use the word IF with such carelessness. This is the sport of the so famous IFS.... IF he would have had more stamina IF he would've come better prepared IF he would've landed that punch IF he would've dodged that punch IF he had more hearrt IF he would've kept his old corner IF the other guy would've taken advantage & finished him IF he would've been a bit faster........... I could go on & on forever with this **** as u can see!!!! ... IFFFFFFFFFFFF ONLY THAT.............. BUT GUESS WHAT?!?!??!... They didn't ... that's how people win & lose in this sport (and most others , and in LIFE as well) IFFFFFFF .... BUT IT DIDN'T HAPPEN THAT WAY!!!! IF people before Columbus would have been right about the Earth being squared or flat shaped, the world would be a complete different thing... but guess what... ok, u get it... they were wrong!!!!!!!!! :admin
I love how you tickle your own fancy by mentioning the fact that the fight went extacly as you predicted. When in reality you where so engulfed in your own predetermined analysis to actually veiw the fight with unbaised eyes. You know I'm not trying to start some war of words with you but serioiusly....even before clottys post fight interview that was posted on this site you knew he developed a great sense of appreciation and respect for cotto's strengh and boxing ability, there where points in the fight when it looked like he wanted to damn near quit. Through the first three rounds cotto fought with supreme confidence using angles, blocking counters and utilizing his great jab. Sure it seemed like he was in a bit of survival mode after the cut but who wouldn't be??...cotto once again showed his ability to adjust and adapt yet fans on here have the audacity to question his mental state?? Then again I've always been the guy on the outside looking in.
Maybe cause Clottey didn't want to take chances in those last 3 or 2 rounds? I thought the 10th round was an even round until Cotto land a big left hook i think twice in a row that might make Clottey think that Cotto isn't breaking down and won't be breaking down in those 2 last rounds. Clottey even said that he don't want to take chances in those last 2 rounds but he didn't really give a reason why. I think in the last second of the 10th round is the reason why Clottey didn't throw enough punches in the last 2 rounds.
Cotto has somehow never gotten the respect he deserves. As a boxing fan you have to realize what he gives to the sport. Entertaining fights, challenging fights, and some world class sportsmanship. Sure he has been in some wars, but thats what we as fans want to see. How can you descredit and write off our favorite fighters after one loss. When you constantly fight the best, you will eventually lose. Teddy Atlas should give Cotto the chance to really prove himself as damaged goods. I lost all respect for Teddy after this interview. Cotto did win the last three rounds, and maybe Clottey was gassed because all the body work Cotto did. He seems to forget Cotto is known as one of the best body punchers in the game. He also forgot that he had a very huge chunk of his eye ripped out by a nasty but from round 3 and still finished. Clottey is a beast, and will continue to give any welter a problem. Much respect to Cotto for taking on yet another dangerous opponent. And it will be another great fight for boxing!!
I respect Hopkins analysis and opinion, but Atlas seems to be lost with this one. I would like to know what rounds did Clottey had Cotto hurt and didnt take advantage. Im just confused, even with Cotto's eye cut I remember Cottos attacks having more of an impact on Clottey than Clottey having on Cotto. How was Cotto going downhill when he won the last few important rounds? Questions Atlas should answer what specific round did Clottey have that could have possibly tell Cotto to quit on the fight if he would have attack like Atlas is saying???atsch
Cotto only had 1 round where he hurt Clottey and that was the 6th, and even then most of Cotto's punches were blocked. Clottey beat the **** out of Cotto and the judges stole the decision from him, because it was in MSG. With that being said, Cotto isn't damaged goods, he just went against two of the 3 biggest WW in the division who were able to walk him down and punish him, there is no shame in that.
Lmfao @ Clottey beat the **** out of Cotto. Come on man thats bs. It was a real close fight but i honestly thought Cotto by winning the last 3 rounds got him to win the fight.
Atlas can see in Cotto what I can see.... that he don't have the heart of a true champion.... he gave up against Margarto.... and would of been stopped by Clottey too if he knew how to cut a ring down.... Cotto ran in that fight in the later rounds.... like he did against Mosley and Margaroto aswell. He obviously lacks a little bit of hunger and heart.... which is why I think he brought his son to the ring with him in his last fight I believe. I also get the impression that he don't train with the same intensity as other elite fighters do. Don't get me wrong Cotto IS world class and very talented but I think he just lacks that grit the other elite fighters have out there. I read body language very well and trust me.... Cotto isn't the 'warrior' people think he is. Bring on the attacks....
I never said the fight went as I exactly predicted, that wasn't my point at all. What I was referring to wasn't Cotto's "mentality", it's how he has trouble when he's pressured affectively. I'm a fan of Cotto so don't get me wrong there, you just misunderstood my point. What I said was Cotto tends to panic or show signs of it when he's pressured or looks to be some danger. That said, I always also said Cotto fires back and is more dangerous when hurt/troubled, all a fighter has to do is withstand that and its obviously easier said than done. Margarito showed he was able to handle it but in all honesty, at least how I think, it ruined him. Cotto landed some shots on him that you can tell Margarito was stunned/shocked from them but his conditioning and desire carried him through it, usually the affects either show signs in the ring or after it. I'm not basing that just as an opinion but as a fact I believe in, others can disagree, I have no problems about it and enjoy being proven wrong when it comes to a flaw a certain fighter I like overcomes or proves false. Cotto was hurt and in serious trouble by the likes of Torres, Corley, Judah, Margarito, Mosley. Not to say these fighters are crap, hell no, just saying that when pressure is applied he's usually in trouble but fights through it. My prediction was a Cotto win and that's what happened, all I said was Clottey will have moments where it looks like he's taking charge but will let them slip through due to his lack of finishing skills and stamina and that's what happened many times during the fight. I'm not saying Cotto has a weak mentality, hell no. If he had a weak mentality he would have broken down/quit against many others including Clottey where he was cut badly. When I say mentally "break down" I mean being in panic mode or in trouble when pressured, nothing else.
Clottey is a dirty fighter who has too many sneaky tactics to lose "easily" to anyone, whoever is in there against him will look bad anyway. I would pick Mosley, Mayweather, Williams and Berto over him. Margarito beat him as well, that hand injury isn't a good enough excuse, we have seen many other fighters fight through it. Maybe broke his hand and ribs many times in many different fights and he never showed signs of it nor went into 100% defensive mode with less activity yet he's **** on. Fact is, Clottey always had stamina issues. He's a good fighter but one I would consider a gatekeeper at best.
