Decent fighters who never got an easy break....

I'd start with Youngstown, Ohio's Lenzie Morgan.

I only recall seeing him in action once, against the fearsome punching power of Nigel Benn in Brentwood, Essex in 1991.

Although clearly beaten on points, he acquitted himself well, and knew his way around the ring pretty well.

He was blighted with heavy scarring down one side of his body, the result of a house fire when he was a child which claimed the lives of members of his family (including his mother, I believe.)

A look at his record of 14-32-3 does not tell the whole story of how Morgan was, by and large, thrown in with some of the top fighters of the day, nearly all of whom had winning records.

Only 6 of his defeats came via the quick route, as he moved up through the weights, finally boxing, extraordinarily, at heavyweight, having started out as a stringy light middleweight!

Would appear to have called it a day now, having lost back-to-back to the capable Elieser Castillo.

One wonders what could have been achieved if he had been under the wing of, say, Britain's Frank Warren, who could, no doubt have guided Morgan around the minefield of truly elite fighters to fight for some version of a world title.....

But hey-ho, in the political world of boxing, if you ain't got the connections..........

Angel Vasquez was a very good fighter at 126. He had an awsome left hook which reminded me of Tito. He started late and when he got frustrated he would pretty much have a mental meltdown by clowning around to a points lost to I beleive Polo. I don't know what ever happened to him.

 

I remember him on TNF. He was not that bad, he was overmatched most of the time.

 

i would say jermain taylor but he had a golden opportunity against froch and just dropped the ball. other than that he's been in pretty tough since early in his career.

What ever happened to Jawaid Khaliq? I heard about him a few years ago as a rising prospect but he just disapered. Boxrec says his last fight was in 2004.

 

I liked Candy Man Coverson. I think that's how to spell it. I only saw him once or twice but I remember thinking he was the type of fighter that if he had his head on straight could stay in there with anyone.

 

Micky Ward........!!

& to a certain extent, Nate Campbell.

Marquez -- no i'm not referring to Pacquiao-Marquez 2 (or even 1, really.. other than the adversity he's dealt with which would include the 3 knockdowns in the first fight!!), he's had to work so hard for so long while in the shadow of Morales & Barrera... low paydays, awkward fights.. questionable decisions... HARD fights which didn't really yield high pay-days! He's always had to work for it. Never been handed anything on a plate. And has always been up against it.


Winky, too. Had to work EXTREMELY hard like all talented fighters who lack a high-profile amateur career (Nate Campbell is like Winky & he only started boxing seriously & professionally at age 24 or something, I read)
