Um, this. Excellent post. I would like to add that Pavlik is VERY good at landing his right hand on this chin even while his opponent is firing back. Despite being a long, straight puncher-boxer, he is better than he gets credit for in a firefight.
don't know if paul can handle pav's punches but if he can i like his chances. by the way why is no one critisizing pavlik for fighting a welter weight. i remember jt got all types of **** for fighting ouma and spinks. talk about a double standard.
I'm leaning towards Williams boxing his way to a UD. Williams made the very awkward winky wright look like a novice. A 43 yr ol Hopkins showed how easy it is to outwork & outfight Pavlik. I don't think Pavlik offers more than a 1-2 with a big punch. Your going to need more than that to beat Williams.
QUOTE=Paul williams has fought 14 times between 154 and 160... and once over. so this is the fight you want to see. not pavlik-abraham. pavlik-sturm. pavlik-froch. pavlik-allen green. pavlik-kessler. those are all more desireable fights then pavlik-williams.
Pavlik vs Sturm will be a boring fight in which nobody wants to see. Kessler, Abraham, Froch already have schedule for their fights in a big suoer middleweight tournament. The big fight for Pavlik at this moment is again Paul Williams. The middleweight division beside Pavlik is so weak that Williams could easily dominate that division if he beats Pavlik first. Now about Pavlik vs Green well that fight makes no sense in which that fight will most likely be at a catch weight in which Pavlik don't want it and Green doesn't bring money to the table for Pavlik.
abraham only is in that tournament because pavlik is avoiding him like he owes him child support. if pavlik was willing to fight AA he would still be at MW.
PTP by UD. I envision Paul continuously circling Pavlik and landing his jab. When he stops moving I see him flurrying punches and winning the exchanges more times than not. For Pavlik to win imo, he'll have to stop PTP and because I've never seen Paul hurt or in trouble, I don't feel comfortable going out on that limb. Check out this brief analyst that PTP gives on the Pav-Hopkins fight. 2:40 mark [YT]N_HkQs5mnNw[/YT]
i am not going to argue over whether AA could have or should have done anything. The fact is he is now fighting in a different category. The reason everyone says certain weights are talentless is because everyone chases the easier belt or bigger money somewhere else higher or lower. I am not buying into the weight hopping buzz. I dont care if a fighter stays at the same weight his whole career.
I agree with you Beenie. I think this is a fight that Williams can win, but I certainly understand why he's the underdog in this one. I think Williams is more versatile than Pavlik and that versatility may just be the difference in winning this fight. People describing Williams as a guy who just stands and throws a lot of punches is inaccurate here. The guy has a long and effective jab which he under-utilizes. Against a heavy hitter like Pavlik, I think Williams will use movement and his jab more often than ever before. And his fast hands and better combination punching will lead him to a UD against the fairly predictable style of Pavlik. Let's see how Williams survives a Pavlik onslaught though. This fight comes down to how good Paul can take Kelly's punch, because you know eventually he will be caught with a good shot.
I agree with this. I only see a KP stoppage victory. He knows Williams is made for him and it will be proved this Fall. I like Paul, but he's going to have to take it to another level to win this. Pavlik is a lot bigger, and to add to that, Paul isn't exactly the slickest cat out there. It shouldn't go 12.
Paul Williams is just too slick with good head movement and will slap the **** out Pavlik all night. I will be surprised if Pavlik wins 2 rounds. His dumbass trainer Jack Loew will just tell him to double jab all night long like.
