These idiots with the endless 'slapper' comments get more annoying every time. Calzaghe DID have talent, no doubt.

However, his career did not match the talent he had and what he could have achieved (and that's without beating Toney or RJJ in their primes).


9 yrs after beating Eubank, to unify the belts... -- never once truly tried everything in his power to secure a fight with a middleweight by getting them to step up nor did he ever think about stepping up to lhw & when he did it wasn't to fight genuine, BIG, young light-heavyweights.


(this is all why Naseem Hamed & Winky have decent cases for having had AS GOOD AS or even a lil bit BETTER careers than Calzaghe).

this is just it.. he MAY have... but he didn't ever try enticing Abraham or Taylor to come up, did he? Even when they all started begging for fights with him.. he wouldn't make the fight (vs. Taylor, Winky or Pavlik -- despite them being smaller, "lesser able" <-- in his opinion, boxers...).

I mean this is a guy who thinks he could beat Wlad at HW. So why didn't he try it? or atleast try fighting some other lesser HW like Valuev or Sam Peter? or even going up to Cruiserweight?


Calzaghe, as a person, yes was a dick.. lotta talk, not much follow-through.

I agree with you, I don't think we will ever know how good he was. I think his ego ruined his career and I loved watching him box. In my opinion he had the skills to do everything he wanted. What is sort of annoying to me is that he knew this, he wanted to be big in america and when he had his best chance at doing so.. fought with manfredo. What gets to me is he turned down fights as you said with jermain taylor/pavlik who at the time were unbeaten on the belief that he was simply too good for them. Always saying why should he fight who he knows he could beat... the simple answer being because your a boxer and they are the best that boxing has to offer at the time. I realise i've contradicted myself a little bit but i've just been sat thinking about it. Although i'm a big joe fan i can't help being a little dissapointed he wasted himself.

 

Dude, get off Calzaghe's back. He did what he had to do in every fight, hence the undefeated record. Most fighters have a "bad" night at least once in their careers. Maybe Joe did also, but he didn't lose. He beat the talent that was out there. His last 3 fights are evidence. Maybe RJJ was done by then, but Calzaghe flat out kicked his ass and IMO he beat Hopkins convincingly.

 

p.s. I'm not some UK nuthuggin' buttwipe. I enjoyed watching JoCals fights

 

mate, it's okay, it can be a hard pill to swallow if you had affection for him in the ring. But really, a lot of ppl I talk to... after some detailed explanation begin to come around and think "damn, you're right... can't believe I didn't realize this before / the more and more I think about this, the more I begin to question myself".

Now even those fights he didn't take were NOT foregone conclusions, either. While he would have had pretty decent shots at winning, so would quite a few of his opponents.


Also, i bet AA is kicking himself for not stepping up earlier. Poor guy killed himself to make 160 again & again while under the illusion that a fight with Pavlik is getting closer! hah.

 

I don't think that was aimed at me as like i said i'm a fan. He really shouldn't have been allowed in the ring with people like manfredo though. It's wierd being a fan but at the same time hating him that little bit for never being what he could be. This is why no matter what the opinion of carl froch, you have to respect him for taking on all comers.

Notice how so many great boxers MOVE UP IN WEIGHT once they start dominating at the weight they're already at. Joe didn't.

luckily for you & him, his one saving grace IS also that he didn't.... didn't officially lose! However, that fight with B-Hop could easily have gone the other way. Also, I sure hope you weren't paying too much heed to Setanta's commentary. That was ridiculously biased. I was pining for Jim Watt mid-way-through.
