Who was more talented Roy Jones or James Toney. Forget how their career's panned out, who! had the potential to do the most ? lets assume Toney would of stayed inshape. Who was more talented ?
roy jones toney may have more boxing skill but roy jones is one of, if not THE, most talented fighters of all time
well...assuming neither was in their prime when rjj outclassed him to that lopsided UD (which is the fight which really turned me into a more than just a passive boxing fan)... toney was some talent there is no denying that but ive never seen someone look so unbeatable in their prime as roy did. it was a marvel to watch.
Ian "Dappa" Napa. A domestic fighter who is probably the most "skilled" defensive fighter in Britain today.
Wha???? Without a doubt it's Jones....BUT, JT is more of a natrual fighter. James has better instincts and ring knowledge than Roy. Roy was just a talented **** with natural god given gifts that he was born with. His talent is top notch...James is just a natural fighter. Talent isn't really in abundance in James' case but he is an incredible boxer.
It is Roy. But people need challenge their preconceived ideas about what boxing talent actually means IMO. Because talent in boxing is much more then just speed and athletic ability. They are just aspects of it, possibly the most important ones but alas not the only attributes you need to look at. Take a fighter like Arguello..Not a guy who will be remembered for his speed or fluidity but that didnt stop him from being one the greatest fighters of his generation with perhaps the best resume around at his time. Obviously he had other attributes and intangibles that made him such an effective fighter. Now James has a bucket of boxing talent. His durability, eye for seeing/dodging punches and natural fighting instinct are very impressive. It might not seem so obvious but its there. I think especially Americans are conditioned to expecting Ali like speed and athleticism from all their great fighters and anyone who doesnt have that must not have been blessed with a lot of boxing talent. Disagree with looking at it like that. Thats why I dont see how a guy like Mayweather is anymore, if at all, naturally gifted as a guy like Chavez. For me Roy isnt the most talented boxer there has ever been..he is just really, really up there.
He is good value that midget. Tad more flash then substance I find though..for all his cool moves he isnt particularly effective I find.
as far as an athlete goes you would have to say jones. but as a pure boxer its toney hands down.but as said before toney lost to jones but that is just do to the styles and how they match. roy was such an athlete with such blinding speed he could do things wrong and get away with it.but toney has more of an understanding about punching in angles and defense than jones could ever dream of.plus toney has a much better beard.
