Its interesting to read different fighters thoughts on boxing

Sugar Ray Robinson - the greatest boxer of all time called boxing a 'barbaric sport', he was happy to sail into retirement after his loss to Maxim and only came back after being shaken down by the IRS. Its interesting his losses here past his prime get held against him

Chris Eubank - very frequently openly called boxing a barbaric sport and said he was only in it for the money

Nigel Benn - seemed to have a love for boxing and hated Eubanks views on it 'being a barbaric sport' added to their intense rivalry

Floyd Mayweather Jr - Seems to be in the sport just for the money, does he love the sport?

It should be noted many boxers fall out of love after taking a serious beating, seeing an opponent die or maimed

What other examples are there? I think Sugar's opinion of boxing is quite ironic considering his greatness

Ezzard Charles was not too keen on his chosen sport, and after the Paret tragedy, Emile Griffith's passion for boxing noticeably dropped off, as evidenced by his detached "going for points" style.

Good examples, I also wonder how close Roy Jones was with McClellan, I think they were friends but aren't sure how close they were, he has given Gerald financial support but says he refuses to visit him until he hangs his gloves up

    Certainly sombering thoughts

    Awesome thread idea.

I only know of Eubanks disdain for the "sport"

Looking forward to reading a lot on this thread.

Benn didnt spar much? I remember the video of him sparring with Duran, that would have been a corker of a fight in '89

Calzaghe didnt spar much at all either.

    Very interesting thread topic!

It seems to me that of the top present day fighters, Juan Manual Marquez has an intense pride and love for the sport.
Shane Mosely and Bernard Hopkins also come to mind, guys who are in position to walk away, but either do not want to...or can't!

There doesnt seem to be many fighters who study the sport, Hopkins and Toney would be 2 fighters who do, I wonder if Jones does/did as he has stylistic similarities to 40s/50s fighters like Burley and Moore, which could perhaps have been learnt in the gym.

Eubank said he hated the sport but in his autobiography he exclaims his love for it and claims he always loved boxing.

Red Cobra: Emile Griffith likes boxing. He told me he followed teh sport until recently but now watches fights when he can with his son.

  12. Who would hate boxing? Especially boxers!!

Roy was learning from Sugar Ray Leonard as a kid, I'd say he loved the sport.

Tommy Burns campaigned against boxing after he retired and said he didn't care where he was ranked among the heavyweight champions. He also apologised for his racist atitudes and campaigned against racism.

Sam Langford loved the sport to the extent that he refused to give it up even after he was blind and had no regrets about what it had done to him as an old and broken man.

Most probably have a love for it going into it, its just the grim reality. Its more the damage it does to you and you're fellow boxers, look at all the punch drunk homeless pennyless boxers today.

Plus have you ever had headaches for a year straight after a fight amongst other aches and pains? I'd say those are more minor injuries though. Thankful I never pissed blood or rupture my liver that would be scary, might even stop me drinking for a week or 2
