If leonard had continued his comeback, after beating Kevin Howard,he would have had some big fights within the next year or so. If Leonard-Hearns 2 had taken place in 1984 instead of 1989,I think Hearns might just have nicked the decision. What do you reckon ?

Hard to judge this 1, Hearns is a proven tough style for Leonard in both fights, would it just be a repeat of the 1989 fight? Or would Leonard have much more left in the tank? Would Leonard learn from the first fight and employ different tactics early? Would Hearns fade down the stretch at 154? How would Hearns learn from the first fight? Could Hearns chin hold up?

154 was Hearns' best weight, 147 was Leonard's. Assuming this is at 154, I think Tommy takes it. Leonard indeed puts up a good fight, but is disadvantaged in this one, while Tommy is stronger. Hearns by UD or late TKO.

I think Hearns would have beaten SRL at 154 over 12.

Leonard gets ****in murdered, Hearns would have done a real number on him at 154, Leonard is a myth, just look at him in the Howard fight, he was handed it on a plate, Leonards a cunning rat, he knew who he could con & bluff but straight after the Howard fight he went back down his hole again just waiting 4 everyone else 2 get old, he knew he'd get hammered by Hagler/Hearns, he's no mug, just look at the way he controlled/hi-jacked the media.

He was comprehensivly outboxed & (behind on all 3 cards, 3/4/2) by Hearns in 81 until Hearns gassed out & Ray nailed him in the 14th. At 154 in 84 Leonard just would not have the speed too off-set the Hearns assault who was then at his peak best IMO, Tommy has the luxury of boxing Leonard over 12 rounds & not 15 so he boxes him for a big UD or bang's him out in style, i recken tommie would go for the blow-out:yep either way Leonard gets done up here & he ****in well new it, hence the bail out after the Howard debacle:smoke

With Ray there was a lot of "Houdini", smoke and mirrors. I've NEVER trusted his reasons for anything. He was being pressed into the metal for two VERY demanding challenges in Hagler and Hearns...and I won't even delve into Curry coming into his own about that period.

Sure, as it went he's an icon and a hero. OK. But he left the party just as they turned-up the music, only to return later after all of the hardest fights had been fought, edging past the remnants and salvaging draws under stipulations of weight, etc.

Here's a good one. The guy agrees to come back against Hagler only after watching a fraction of Hagler struggle past a guy he would have zoomed years earlier.....demanding thumbless gloves. He endlessly talked about he thumbless gloves for a year. His terms for Marvin. Then, after Hagler and another vanishing act, Ray returned but the thumbless gloves issue never came up again.

    Why?

Sugar was a myth? How did Duran, the god, get comprehensively out-boxed twice by this man? Oh, he didn't train...I forgot. :verysad

I would make Hearns favorite against Leonard at 154lb, but it could have been a repeat of what happened at 147lb. Leonard took a better shot and seemed to the tougher hombre. These are always going to be factors in competitive equations.

    Leonard is a myth. :verysad

RW, where you been? If only we can get back Salsanchezfan.

I agree with the thumbless glove issue which makes me yet more suspicious of the Sugarman's career moves.

After viewing Leonard's performance the month before and Tommy's performance with Duran there is no doubt that Tommy was the best 154 pounder-by far. No one else even comes close. Tommy was the new athlete-bigger, stronger, faster. Not like that wet noodle of a dud who came in at 145-the hurtman.

Tommy knocks him out this time because Tommy's punching is too sharp for him and doesnt get past the early rounds.

selfkill what you change your name for?

didnt you see sugar ray the previous month? he was floored by what looked like a jr welter so there's no excuse for this claim. You need to think more outside the box. we know he cant take that kind of a shot. if the rematch would turn out like the first match then the Louis-schmeling rematch should have gone to a decision
