Low Blow after the bell. Corect me if I'm wrong but are they not both DQable offences if the victom can't go on?
I saw this fight live at the time and both fighters kept punching well after the bell, one of which was the low blow. With both of them outside of the rules the ref couldn't dq Roberto. Today though its likely Buchanan's management could have argued for and received a no contest decision allowing Kenny to keep his title.
Buchanan kept punching after the bell and Duran retaliated with a punch below the belt which the referee deemed a legal punch. Buchanan went down and could not recover in time to come out for the next round.
The ref was convinced that Buchanan was over acting & he was IMO, a swan lake performence indeed, the ref just said that Buchanan had a foul proof protector on & that he (Buchanan) did'nt want 2 continue. Duran hit Buchanan border line & it was'nt a full on smack in the nuts as such delivered upwards with full power, the ref just was'nt impressed with the Buchanan hystrionic's/bitching & bleating all through the fight:smoke
i don't think he faked it much to be honest (he said duran ruptured a testicle and while this may be a lie, i think he was pretty messed up). still the ref didn't see it so no go.
I almost entertained that idea a little while ago..Its just Kenny is so tough and had soaked up a lot of hard shots all night. The shot did seem a bit innocuous compared to some of the brutal shots Duran had been landing on Kenny all night. I dont think he faked it..but to be honest I did sort of entertain the idea he was looking for an out..I dont believe it though, I go with the official story..he took a shot the nuts and couldnt go on.
A man who posts here who was ringside at the actual fight disagrees. :-( He says you could hear the actual impact on the cup. I'm talking about John Garfield, by the way.
Hey, you've got eyes, go ****in use-em & come back after you've watched the fight & then say that there was'nt a heavy dose of drama from Buchanan & who else have you This content is protected seen behave in that manner after a whack below the belt. Buchanan blew it as he totally dismissed Duran as nothing but a young upstart, he ****ed up then writhes around as if he's been ass fisted by a barbed wire glove:-(
Take a look at Ken's expression in the corner & the shock when the ref just said too him thats it fight over, he looked ready to get up, it came out of the blue, again i don't think the ref was that impressed with Buchanan complaining about Durans rough & ready approach too the rules & as defending champion i think he expected a bit more respect/chivalry from the challenger & the ref, you can only go by what yer eyes tell yer:think
There's a better angle of the low blow on the special features DVD "Champions Forever: Latin Legends". This one is behind Buchanan, as opposed to the usual one behind Duran. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOKl62mAGzM&fmt=18 Definitely low. There's also a pic somewhere of the low blow, angled to the left of Duran and right of Buchanan. Definitely low...I'm sure I'm not the only one who's seen this photograph. On a side note, it's pretty sad that Buchanan is in his 60s and trying to fight again professionally.
I've seen close-ups of the punch and it was not borderline, it was below the belt and looked square on the nuts. By the way dont think I'm having a pop at Duran, I love the bloke its the ref who pissed me off.
