Joe Calzaghe very disrespected on here, lets here some Boxers thoughts on him.

I've had a certain dislike for him,since I saw him live ,boring for Britain against Starie ,on the Tyson-Francis undercard in Manchester.

I'm taken aback that people could rate him ahead of Jones.

To be fair a lot of us grew up in a time when boxing was pretty much all Americans. If there were European boxers we never heard about them, So a lot of Americans feel threatened to find out that we aren't just that much more talented than everybody else. Its a rude awakening for some.

 

Going 46-0, no matter who you've fought, is a pretty remarkable defiance of the odds. You have to be a special fighter to do that. History will remember Calzaghe much better than many people on ESB, those who can't appreciate the exceptional, and unique, fighter that he is or was.

 

Maybe this generation of American fighters isn't as talented as say that of Sugar Ray Leonard's. It's a possibility isn't it?

I'm not sure the British boxing scene in the 80s containing among others Mcguigan,Honeyghan, Bomber Graham,Andries,Bruno was that much worse than the present day.

 

I agree, but the American boxing media only grudgingly shows non American fights and almost never televises fights in Europe so even if the American fighters of this generation aren't as talented the public will never hear of the talent "over there." Instead they'll hear that boxing is dead or something.

I don't care for Calzaghe's mature style,but I concede that it was an intelligent way of getting round his hand problems. I'm always willing to give allowance to fighters.

I like him but hes not quite an ATG.

 

I'm not a fan of his boxing style, especially as he got older, but he was a very good fighter. He showed an ability to adjust and still be successful as he aged and the wear-and-tear built up on his hands. The best win of his career came pretty damn late (3rd to last fight).

 

Froch openly admitted before he got close to world level that he was a massive Calzaghe fan.

 

Yeah, very insightful observation. I certainly can't remember ever seeing anyone criticize an elite non-white fighter on this forum. :dead

 

Yeah, no one ever criticizes non-white fighters like De La Hoya, Pacquiao, and especially Mayweather.
