He moved up from middleweight in order to avoid genuine middleweights like Hopkins, De La Hoya (!) and Tarver (what??) according to truushot :rofl

Not sure exactly when this was as Calzaghe hasn't been a middleweight since he was an amateur in 1992 and De La Hoya was a super featherweight back then so was quite prescient of Calzaghe to move up to avoid him...

 

He didn't have to drop anything at all. Just sign the contract he was offered by Showtime. He chose to fight Morrade Hakkar (same as he would have with the Showtime deal but for half as much money) and William Joppy instead.
