Just to see whether it's as funny the second time as when you did it in the other thread, can you list some of the 'middleweights in their prime' that Calzaghe ducked by 'moving up'? :think:rofl

Also, just to refresh my memory as I'm a bit stoopid today, what year was it that Calzaghe 'moved up' from middleweight in order to accomplish said ducking of prime fighters?

    Thanks :p

    :rofl:roflcredit to the thread starter!

what about this from MARVIN HAGLER....

    Hagler on Calzaghe

"I knew the first time I saw Calzaghe that he really had something, he went in there completely unfazed against (Chris) Eubank which nobody else had done. Eubank was the guy who usually seemed to have control of everything around him but the way Calzaghe went in there and manhandled him like that...

"I was watching it in Italy, it was the same night England beat Italy to qualify for the soccer World Cup.

"Calzaghe showed and proved power, speed, strength, workrate, stamina, chin, heart and every tangible and intangible that night and that's why I'm not suprised that he's not lost since.

"Sometimes it's like watching a welterweight or junior-middleweight in a super-middleweight's body because he's so nimble and sharp handed. I would never bet against him."

 -queue calzaghe haters bagging their heads againts their keyboards

When I read these threads with all the Calzaghe bashing, I always get the feeling that the 'hate' is nothing more than frustration at the fact that they know the underlying truth of Joe's potential skills, and are just annoyed and pissed that they never saw more of it, so they do nothing more than criticise. I hope that's the case.

I feel it isn't an inherent hate against the guy, or a diss of his skills ( I always kinda think people who say that Joe's not a good boxer are somewhat ******ed, so don't take much notice), but just a realisation that they wouldn't have minded seeing more of him, and hence all the speculation on who he could have fought and how he would have done.
That he's retired now when he seemed to have only just arrived onto the center stage - especially for all the people who never even heard of him before the Lacey fight - must be really frustrating because of the possible match-ups left unfulfilled.

I've followed Joe's career since the early 90s and I have to agree with some of the quotes, especially Taylor's, about leaving on top of the game healthy and wealthy. That's surely must be one of the most important aspects of a sport as brutal as boxing. Some people forget or don't know that Joe's been involved in boxing since he was 8 or 9 years old, and was amateur for about 12 years before turning pro for 15 years. That's roughly 2/3rds of his entire life spent training and fighting. And people still want him to continue ffs!?

I'm glad he went out on top, and with his brains and bank account intact - and a few world titles ain't bad either - because the truth of the matter is: there's always some other guy to fight; or some forum fanboy dissing your career and how you should have done this or done that etc...

I think Joe retiring with everything he's gained from the sport is the biggest STFU to his critics there is.

/funniest diss I heard on Calzaghe ever: 'He was born in England; he's not even ****ing Welsh!'

You're probably trolling but just in case. Toney got humiliated by Jones in 94 and moved up to LH straight after. By 1997 when Calzaghe arrived on the scene, Toney was fighting as high as cruiser. How was Calzaghe ducking him?

Hopkins asked for $3 million to fight Calzaghe in 2002, just after his win over Trinidad. Calzaghe's camp offered what he asked for and Hopkins turned around and asked for $6 million.

Jones was already a year at LH by the time Calzaghe won his WBO title. Calzaghe could very well of forced this fight, had he of moved to LH and had travelled to America. But considering Jones wouldn't even entertain a bout with DM, what makes you think he would with Calzaghe?

Joe Calzaghe's best wins were over B level competition: Kessler and Lacy. Idk if Lacy is even B level. C plus maybe.

But his most reputed wins were over faded fighters. Eubank, Hopkins, and Jones. The Roy Jones win is the most ridiculous, and the fact that he went out with his last fight being against him is a perfect summary of how his career as a whole went. Good fighter, but he will probably be extremely overrated by fans who don't know any better.

Ironically Calzaghe's accent is largely working class.

I think the 'sophisticated' bit comes from the fact that ALL British accents come across as sophisticated to Americans.

An American friend once remarked that a mutual friend (Bert) was "ok but I don't like his snobbish English acccent."

Bert had an East London cockney accent, near the bottom of Britain's social heirarchy.

It's a bit like (the reverse) British folks referring to all Americans as Yankees, even those from Alabama and Georgia.

The only people who appreciate Calzaghe are the ones who thought Peter Mcneely at 36-1 was a threat to Tyson and Bryan Nielson at 64-1 was an ATG. Most normal fans can say beyond a manufactured unbeaten record. Loads of Warren fighters end up with 30-40 + wins, he feeds them dumpling after dumpling.

True. People who look too much into records are just giving away their inexperience.
