Mine was undoubtedly salvador sanchez, and for these reasons 1. First and foremost, he had the illest fro in the game at a time where fros were what was in at the time. His was ****ing sublime I **** you not. 2. He was the exact opposite of the typical mexican fighter, instead employing a scientific style with perfect foot movement and accurate, lightning quick, strafing blows. He would often lull his opponent to sleep before disposing of them in a wild, yet precise flurry. 3. Even though he had the ability to box, he often elected to brawl, like his fights against Danny Lopez and Wilfredo Gomez in particular. Even when brawling he would use subtle body movement to avoid taking damage while delivering punishing hooks and uppercuts to the body. 4. His chin was ROCK solid...Wilfredo Gomez is IMO one of the top pound for pound punchers ever, Salvador shook them off. Lopez, Azumah Nelson and Juan Laporte weren't slouches either. 5. His legacy was shortlived, and therefore intriguing. had he not died, would he have gone on to become the greatest mexican fighter of all time, maybe one of the greatest lower weight fighters of all time? he certainly was going in that direction. who's your favorite?
Ruben Olivares...Probably the main reason is he dominated my favorite fighter from my country and put one of the best performances I have ever seen from a Mexican fighter, actually one of the best Ive seen from any fighter. His resume is just about the best of any Mexicans, choc full of quality fighters from bantam up to superfeather...His inconsistency is a negative but he was a notorious party animal and when he was focused and fit he just about beat everyone put in front of him. From the film available of him you can see he was just an excellent boxer with power that few have possessed over the long history of this sport.
God knows. I feel differently on different days, what I want to watch. Right now Juan Manuel Marquez. With what he's got coming up, why pick anyone else?
Marquez; great technician and powers of recovery. Lovely form when he throws his shots and power in the right hand. Sal Sanchez; fluent, hard to judge where he's gonna' throw shots fom, can brawl or box; great chin. Cool fro :good
Pipino Cuevas, No nonsense fighter. Just goes foreward & starts throwing punches until the opponent is hammered into submission. With bonecrunching power!
I disagree, Ray Leonard's fro from the Duran 2 fight was p4p baddest of all time :bbb In all seriousness my favourite Mexican fighter is hands down Marco Antonio Barrera. Why ? He was excellent at switching the attack from head to body, he was an excellent counter puncher, a pressure fighter (early days), he was a warrior, he had an excellent chin, he could Box, he had good/decent power. I remember when he absolutely destroyed Paul Lloyd on the undercard to Danny Williams vs Julius Francis is was like......... OMG that was sensational. He beat Lloyd up in a matter of min. Barrera is head and shoulders above any other of my favourite Mexican fighters, Sanchez is next, his counter punching display against Little Red Lopez was tremendous, his coolness under pressure was phenomal to.
They're all great & there are so many reasons to love each + every one of them! However, one person who does not get enough mention in discussions such as these is FINITO LOPEZ. Has a case for being a solid 2nd after JCC...! If he fought in divisions between featherweight & welterweight -- just imagine the love he would've gotten. The smallest men in the sport don't get enough attention. Which sometimes may be fair enough.. but in the case of this one man (as well as a few others such as Khaosai Galaxy) is a grave injustice!
