http://www.eastsideboxing.com/news.php?p=6585&more=1 Here is a great article of this site on 12 nominees for the greatest boxer of the 1970's. Its claims that Carlos Monzon (in the authors opinion) was the greatest boxer in this decade. Do you agree with this and what made him so special in this period? I'm interested as my boxing knowladge is for the most part on the 1980's onwards and because I would like to know more about Monzon, as people rate him so highly on here. Thanks
I have a short list of 3. Muhammad Ali,Roberto Duran and Monzon,of course. I expect a lot of people will mention these three. Monzon was possibly the greatest middleweight ever. Now a dream fight between him and Marvin Hagler. Mouthwatering.
Either Duran or Monzon. Ali had the big names and big fights but was basically a shot fighter after 1975.
We saw all of Duran's best years and the different stages of his career during this decade. It has to be him.
It's close for me between Roberto Duran & Muhammad Ali. Not sure which I'd pick. But Duran's win over Ray Leonard in 1980 and then Davey Moore in 1983 and of course Iran Barkley in 1989, despite some struggles in between, just completely overshadows Ali's '60s record and separates the two by about six places on my all-time list. But then... Carlos Monzon. Best single weight champion ever? It's a tough one, definitely.
I'd possibly say Duran. Muhammad Ali has a truly outstanding resume if we want to talk throughout entire careers though, the only way anyone can possibly knock it is by using this thing about him only being great in one weight division, and frankly that is not my standpoint on the subject. Not to sayhe topples Duran or anything.
IF one included his pre-70's work, it could justify Ali being chosen. But solely off the 70's? Not a chance. Duran, Monzon, and Napoles would be my top 3, with Bazooka and Arguello rounding out the top 5.
It's between Duran or Monzon, but I'm tempted to pick Monzon out of sheer bias. In-fact i'd say Monzon was the greatest of all-time! Ali had a very great period in the 1970's, of course he fought in some of the most well known fights with the likes of Frazier, Foreman, and Norton, but as most already said was a shot fighter. Monzon beat Benvenuti, Griffith, Napoles, Briscoe, and Rodrigo Valdez...on top of retiring on the top of the game. His title fight with Benvenuti in particular should be the best match of the decade in my book.
