A boxing buddy told me Scott Belshaw is to participate in the next prizefighter tournament on the 2nd of October [I read Audley Harrison and Danny Williams have also signed up for it]. Belshaw is traveling to Britain to spar with Sam Sexton on the run-up to their upcoming battles.

An article in todays Irish News reckons that Bernard Dunne will know in the next 48hrs about the opponent and date for his championship defence.

Belshaw is in the line up as is Coley "the pony" Barrett. The line up for this one looks interesting with a lot of well known if somewhat past it names.
Barrett and Belshaw should have boxed for the irish crown instead.
As to the Dunne situation surely its too late now to box on the 26th. of next month.I understand Dunne is in camp already and looking good but ticket sales, fight promotion, the undercard would need a lot more time to sort out surely.

The Irish Amateur Boxing Association have confirmed an eleven man squad for next months 2009 AIBA World Senior Championships in Milan, Italy.
Olympic medalists Ken Egan and Paddy Barnes have been named in the squad which includes nine Irish senior champions and European Union champions, David Oliver Joyce, Darren O'Neill, and Con Sheehan.

"The upcoming Championships in Milan will be another tough test for our squad. But they will draw a lot of confidence from their performances against some of best in the world over the last few years and that will stand to them in Milan.
"I would be quietly confident that we will do well and on behalf of the IABA I wish everyone involved with the Irish squad the very best of luck in Milan.”

We should be careful not to expect too much, but Barnes, Nevin and Sheehan should medal with a favourable draw and all the rest are good eneough with a reasonable bit of luck.
