In light of the spirited Fitz vs Robinson thread, who wins this fight for the world heavyweight champion. Can Robinson do what Fitz did? I think there is virtually zero chance, but i am interested as to what some of the others here think.
over 15 rounds and at 175 i think robinson could of pulled this off more often than not yes corbett was quick on his feet and had a good quick jab and hooked well and moved his head well for the time, but he lacked the power of fitzsimmons which might be crucial here. robinson would have to stick to a game plan of in and out combo`s.so i would give robinson a slight edge although you can never count corbett out against the best welterweight ever.in a series of fights i doubt robinson would win them all. my very humble opinion
Whats the rule set? Rounds? Conditions Corbett was 33 in this fight and only weighed. Fitz was 167 and Robinson would likely weigh 160 tops. But Robinson is plenty more skilled and faster than both men and it isnt by a small margin, Robinson was really a step forward in terms of skill set and ability. Now Robinson was schooling Maxim silly until the hot conditions got to him. I think in ideal conditions he can outbox Corbet and win a decision over 15rounds
so tired of hearing how the heat beat srr and not maxim. dont you think it was just as hot for maxim?
i thought about 175lb was a fair catchweight as i think corbett fought as low as 173. although even if corbett came in at 180lb i dont think it would make a huge difference
No actually it wasnt because Robinson being the much smaller man was moving far far more thus increasing his bodyheat further, hence the heat exhaustion. If the fight was in a modern facility with aircon Robinson would have won a UD, no doubt about it what so ever
if my aunt had balls shed be my uncle lol. not trying to be rude but dont you think maxim had to do some moving to avoid the much faster and snappy puncher srr. surely he just didnt stand there while ray circled and punch.hence it was just as hot for him as ray.
HE probably took 1/3 of the steps if not less, classic stalker versus movement scenario. Stalkers take less steps, they want to engage, boxers want to move. Robinson was clearly the much busier much more fleetfooted fighter So the end result Robinson used more energy and hence got hotter in very hot conditions.
Just curious what exactley did Fitzsimmons do to Corbett? He got his ears boxed off for 13 rounds, went down from the first combination thrown in the fight and had to grab onto Corbett to stall the referee preventing him from being counted out...Then he lands a heroic(albeit terrific) sunday punch to to solar plexus for the knock out. Sounds like Ward-sanchez to me. I will say this...Robinson might not land a one punch knockout blow the way fitz did late to win the fight, but Robinson certainly will not get his ears boxed, knocked down, and easily outboxed the way fitzy was outclassed for 13 rounds.
Powerpuncher is right on how the fight unfolded. I'm not making any excuses for Robinson though, Maxim never cheated, that much is clear. He should be credited for what he achieved that night, he was the light-heavyweight champion of the world, he beat the middleweight champion of the world who may be the greatest fighter ever pound for pound, who was a 'victim of circumstances' on such night. Let's just give Maxim credit, but at the same time recognise what Powerpuncher said, if there was aircon it's a guaranteed points win for Robinson. Let's just put this one to bed now, comes up all the time.
Teeto what about Robinson vs Corbett though? For once I agree with PowerPuncher. Not only does Ray represent a true step forawrd in technique he will likely be bringing things to the table Corbett has never seen before. He may not have the severe punching power Fitz had (and that I doubt because we all know big guys who can punch hard and that's all these old school fighters were for me, very VERY tough guys with a few more tricks than most, I've said it once and I'll say it again you can see from film it is nowhere near what we know today) but Ray would bamboozle Corbett and I think stop him sometime around the 10th. Don't care how good he was in his day Ray Robinson would just outclass him. It's not a question of size when you're taking about guys as primitive as these. ON THE OTHER HAND; Corbett's style, by being so Alien to anything RAY HAS EVER SEEN becomes super-awkward and hard to time. Roughing Ray up and using his superior size Corbett frustrates Ray and lands some massive punches on him. Unlikely, but a big man with a few more tricks than most can knock out anyone much smaller than him who they land on flush. Two totally seperate arguments thought I'd just sum 'em up :good Me? I go for the former.
Robinson did all the work in that fight , he covered twice the ring that Maxim did ,maybe not a smart thing to do ,but thats the way of it.
I'd probably go for the former as well, if Robinson just decides the man is too big to fight, like against Maxim, he might just outbox him for a decision, regardless of how great a scientific pug Corbett was. Or could Robinson in a realistic sense, just hit him with so many shots it would make life seriously difficult for Jim? I don't want to be unfair to Corbett, he is the bigger man.
This is exctly what I mean. And they are punches so smooth and precise, from all angles, turned over with a certain precision and efficiency that Corbett is going to think Ray is from the future. Because he is
