Ray Mercer vs. Marcus "Conan" Silveira in works for upstart Fight Time Promotions

by John Morgan on Jul 26, 2009 at 12:05 pm ET

When former heavyweight boxing champion Ray Mercer (1-0) knocked out former UFC champion Tim Sylvia (24-6) in just nine seconds in June, many MMA observers felt it signaled the end of the line for "The Maine-iac."

But for the 48-year-old Mercer, the quick win will apparently signal the beginning of a run in mixed martial arts.

According to American Top Team boxing coach Howard Davis Jr., the upcoming debut event for his newly formed Fight Time Promotions will look to feature a main event of Mercer and 14-year veteran Marcus "Conan" Silveira (6-4).

"It's not definite, but we're in negotiations now," Davis Jr. recently told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio).

Mercer, a former boxing world champion, earned the win over Sylvia in the main event of June's "Adrenaline MMA III: Bragging Rights." It was Mercer's second experience in MMA, as "Merciless" was submitted by former streetfighting legend Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson in a June 2007 exhibition.

Silveira debuted professionally in 1995, facing notables Maurice Smith, Kazushi Sakuraba, Dan Severn and Wes Sims during his near-14-year career.

"Conan" fought twice for the UFC in 1997, facing Sakuraba twice in the same evening at "Ultmate Japan." Silveira earned a controversial win over "The Gracie Hunter" in their first match of the evening, a bout that was later ruled a no contest. Sakuraba secured a submission win in the rematch later that night.

A former Olympic boxing gold medalist, Davis Jr. said his passion for mixed martial arts has grown during his six years with American Top Team.

"I love mixed martial arts," Davis Jr. said. "It's in my DNA now, in my genes. When I first came to American Top Team, I didn't really understand it. But I see the fighters, and the excitement is there.

"I think it's a wonderful time to start something on my own. So, we put Fight Time Promotions together. Our first show will be at the end of the year."

Davis Jr. is currently eying a Dec. 12 date at War Memorial Auditorium in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., for his debut event, "U.S. vs. Brazil."

With sponsors Everlast, Padron Cigars, and the U.S. Army already on board, and Comcast SportsNet handling broadcast duties, Davis Jr.'s upstart organization is already heading in a positive direction. Further details will be announced shortly on Fight Time Promotions' official website.

Don't see this being a good fight for mercer. Atleast give him a standup fighter, not a Brazilian who held his own with the Gracie hunter/killer:)huh)

Conan's old but he's smart enough to take Mercer down.

Conan is listed as 6-4 on sherdog, but as far as I'm aware he's had way more fights than that: alot of them where back in Brazil though and aren't listed on any database.

Mercer is in trouble in this one. Conan is a beast and unless he's a fool - he won't try to trade with Mercer - he'll go straight for the takedown.

It could be another Bo Cartrell fix.

Ray mercer still has some star power. This is a new mma promotion. Don't be surprise if "conan" takes a dive or keeps it standing. It looks like another potential kimbo market scheme.

    I wouldnt really call Kimbo/Mercer a "fight."

Mercer is 48 years old, he shouldnt be fighting anywhere.

  8. In total agreement with last post. Just go mercer, gracefuly

This wont end well for Mercer. He has only one chance and that is if Silveira doesn't go immediately for the takedown like Silva didn't. That could potentially happen due to Silveira being paid off like whoever it was that Kimbo faced and their were allegations of incentives to keep the fight standing. If Silveira manages to close the distance the fight is as good as over.

Let mercer do something that makes him some money. Sylvia thought he could outbox and beat up an old Mercer, he got his ass kicked. And he was a UFC heavyweight Champion.

    Not knocking MMA...I like it.

i dont think there s enough potential for a 48 year old fighter for this new organisation to start rigging fights, what would the point in that be, kimbo had a huge teenage following from his youtube days, mercer although a likeable character especially from the boxing community but everyone knows he is going nowhere except to collect his pension

Mercer is quite a character still at 48, who knows what the UFCs motives may be... A good convincing winning streak for Mercer marketed correctly might sway a few of the more foolish boxing fans over to MMA to see what it is all about.

  15. The fight lasted for 10 seconds  he didn't get a chance to find out if he could outbox him.

I suppose if he can still fight ... than why not.
