Cotto body size and height look like a junior ww opinion. I mean damn Look at when Cotto and Margarito was next to each other. And look at when Cotto standing next to Clottey. Clottey i think is the same height as Cotto but Clottey body size looks bigger then Cotto body size. Look weighing like 10+ more pounds on fight night don't mean that fighter is big at their division. Example Morales weigh in at 147 pounds on fight night vs Barrera in the 3rd fight is that mean Moralas is a big junior lightweight?

Still, I think Cotto looked smaller compared to Margarito in their fight, not only shorter. To be honest I was shocked with the picture, seeing Margo and Cotto in that ring seemed like watching a welterweight fighting a jr. middleweight. And I'm almost certain that Cotto would look equally ineffective (if not more) if he fought at 154.

You make a good point about mass and the fact that Cotto is thick, though. But I feel that Cotto fights at just the right weight for him. On the other hand, guys like Cintron and Williams moved up in weight and they looked like natural 154-pounders in their fights - Martinez and Phillips/Wright respectively. Cotto would look small vs fighters like these, although he has a "thick" built.

For me it's ultimately been in the results as well, CX7. At this point it's pretty clear Cotto is not the big puncher he was once thought be. He's a physically powerful fighter, who has always held crtical-impact advantage over average sized opposition. The way in which he battered the **** out of guys like Quintana, Judah, Gomez, and Jennings leaves no greater evidence. Only insanely durable fighters like Mosley, Clottey, Margarito, and Urkal could stand up to the crushing force and power of Cotto's compact mass and brawn.

He's average. He's not very tall but he has a WW physique. So I guess he averages out to about average. lol Margarito, Williams, and Clottey. These 3 I would call "big" WW's.

Good post. I agree on certain points, CX7. Although, Margarito is just taller with a different body type, IMCV. When they were in the ring together Cotto hunkered himself down and fought smaller than normal, and Margarito was very erect in his stance. I see what you're saying though. Cotto looked like a mouse in there with an elephant with all his crouching, pressing his gloves together, and his leaning against the ropes. Cotto's aversion to pressure also increased the perception that he was smaller with all the eluding and evading he was doing. He fought extremely 'small' that night - a tactical choice.

Yes, the way Cotto fought in that fight certainly played an important role. I'm not suggesting that Cotto is small, Rafa, nothing like that. It's just that when I think of "big welters", the first names that pop up are the likes of Cintron, Margo, Williams. Although I agree with your other post, that compared to guys like Quintana, Gomez etc. Cotto definitely looks (and is) bigger/more massively built, and that was a big advantage for him in those fights.

    Big, bulky physique & frame.

A bit on the short-side, though.

yes, as someone who rehydrates up to 160... his weight suggests he has enough mass & strength to be able to hang at 154 (which he can)... however, he is very short for a light-middleweight.

He's a genuine 147lb'er. That's what suits a guy with his frame & height. endof.

Being one of the biggest 147lb'ers atm does not automatically mean you are HUGE for your weight-class.

Gatti used to rehydrate ridiculously however at 140 & 147, however did anyone consider him a huge welterweight? No, he was a SMALL welterweight.. despite reportedly rehydrating up to 160ish as a welterweight.

    I hear ya, CX7.

Most people seem to agree with your position. You're doing an excellent job of proving your point, as usual.

Big? Nope, defintely not. Margarito, a true big welterweight, totally dwarfed Cotto in size.

Cotto is about an average sized welterweight.. nothing less, nothing more.

I think we need to ignore the figures & just make a visual judgment.
(so no mention of him rehydrating up to 160+lbs).

He's got a bulky physique & wide frame... but is short.
He's got a top-heavy build but is in no way tall at 147... and would be amongst the shortest top-level 154lb'ers. Therefore, what's the appropriate weight-class for him? 147lbs. Simplissimo.

A better debate is about Manny (not just about he could rehydrate ridiculous amounts) but also his physical measurements -- he's a deceptively big guy (compared to what you'd probably think), despite his short stature.

if he was built the same and about 2-3 inches taller i would say he's a big WW. he's a little above average size just because he's thick, but i wouldn't call him a big WW. i would use big for margarito, williams, and clottey, but not cotto.

cotto's power and style of fighting make him seem like a big WW, but when you see him in there with a big WW like we have in 2 of his last 3 fights he doesn't look or fight like one at all.
