Ian Millarvie

Ian is due to fight Chris Woollas in a 6 rounder on the undercard of Anderson vs Jones this Friday. If you're not going you might catch something of him on Sky.

I don't know much about him myself, he's been due to fight at a couple of bouts I've been at but never has whether through injury or his opponent pulling out. He certainly doesn't seem to have the best of luck.

The Yanks were apparently impressed with him when he was over training. I look forward to seeing him in action this Friday.

 

Millarvie recently signed a 10-fight deal with the American based Northeast Promotions, and has been sparring with heavyweight boxer Monte Barrett up in the Catskills under the direction of manager Stan Hoffman. According to reports, he was beating Barrett up in sparring, Barrett was so frustrated with the big scotsman he threw his headguard off in a rage, screaming abuse at Millarvie & stormed out of the gym! However, Barretts trainer was so impressed that he told Barretts other 5 sparring partners to head home, but asked Millarvie to stay.
This was in the build up to Barrets world title challenge against Valuev. Ian fought his last fight in the Bronx, New York & won a 4 round majority decision. But an american reporter(the only report I seen of the fight) said he was very surprised, as he felt Millarvie had won an easy UD.

Millarvies big problems is that he has been plagued by injuries limiting his fights. The big man is fighting on Friday though, & Im looking forward to it:good

HEAVYWEIGHT boxer Ian Millarvie, the man who has had more comebacks than fights, is convinced he's about to put his career on track at last.
The 6ft 5in slugger from Hamilton is sick of being hailed as a prospect even though he's now 27.
Millarvie has fought just five times in his short pro career due to a combination of illness and injury.
But he reckons his troubles are behind him as he prepares for his latest comeback against Englishman Chris Woollas in Kirkcaldy tomorrow night.
Millarvie said: "It has been very frustrating. I want to get into the ring on Friday and get winning again.
"I have had six comebacks since starting out because there have been long periods when I've been away from the ring. ​

"I'm developing slowly. I've been fighting nearly three years but the sum total of my fights is five, so now I want to be boxing regularly.
"Tommy has promised me three fights before Christmas and if I get them and a few after the festive period I'll be back on course."

Millarvie wants a shot at the British title, currently held by Danny Williams, in a year's time. ​

He said: "I'll be gutted if I'm not fighting for it a year from now. The shape I am in now I would be very disappointed if that didn't come off."

The Scot will return to America to hone his talents because that was his base before beating Sean McClain on points back in April. ​

Millarvie said: "You get good sparring over there. ​

"There are a lot of big guys and you just can't find the same quality here. ​

"You can spar with two or three top guys every day and learn new things from them."

Despite Millarvie's stop-start career, promoter-manager Tommy Gilmour believes he has the nation behind him. ​

Gilmour said: "He captures the public's imagination by being so big and when we get him in the ring he shows he's quite talented." ​

Journeyman Woolas is not expected to pull off a shock, having lost 36 fights out of 62. ​

But Millarvie said: "He is the type of opponent I need. I will learn things from him because he has been about. He has the experience but I've got the ability and power to beat him." ​

 

Yeah, born and bred. Likeable big guy, got some talents, but for me he needs more power to really go places, hopefully it will develop in time.

 

He looked okay, didnt blow me away. Prefer'd the look of Scott Belshaw (before his car crash). Sure the big scott will challenge on the domestic scene, but not so sure how much further he'll go. Depends on what comes out of Germany / Ukraine etc... over the next few years.

 

I'm hoping Sam Peter gets the win in a couple of weeks. He's got the power to get people interested again.

 

Big Millarvie is coming along just fine, hes training in the USA so is learning so much more than he ever could in Scotland. If he can get over his injury worries then who knows what he couldgo onto achieve?

Millarvies got got the brawn, Hoffmans got the brains, theyll make lots of money(this line goes over anyone under the age of 30's head)

 

He's fat like most Heavyweights but his footworks good.

 

Domestically yes , above that no . He's raw.......very raw , but he's a big guy who can punch and has a real drive to improve .

 

This was Millarvies last bout, he looked slower than usual, but that is because he has had a long lay-off with injury & ilness, & came in 25lbs over his best fighting weight. Millarvie plans to be more active this year, to get back to full fitness.

I wouldnt write Belshaw off as domestic at best just yet Bigears, you never know! He should do what Millarvies doing & go to america to learn his trade, that will bring the best out in him.
