    My sentiments entirely!

    I don't know anyone who feels that strongly about LL either way - he had a fairly bland presence outside of the ring - but was an effective operator inside it.

    One could be fairly ambivalent towards him - his dual Canadian / English (not to mention Jamaican, when it suited!) nationality never helped to endear him to the mainstream fan - but you could never say he was one of the most hated ever, surely?!

    But then again he had plenty of fans and became a symbol for the black America for entire decades. So I don't think he qualifies.

    I think polarizing would be a better word for it. He was hated by the powers that be, but as you said, was also a folk hero to millions.

    That's the case with a number of guys though, if not to Johnson's extent. It's tough to think of a boxer that was ever universally hated.

    From a personal perspective, I could never take to Herbie Hide.

    Brash, arrogant and lacking in any personal class or finesse, I was glad to watch Bowe beat up on him all night.

    I was possibly the only Englishman at Millwall FC who was disappointed when he slapped Michael Bentt about.

    It would make my day to see Ola Afolabi (who is everything that Hide is not - friendly, unassuming and underrated) school, humiliate and retire this boorish oaf once and for all.

    What's this? I heard Mundine was a bit of a ***** but haven't heard about the 9/11 or flag-burning incidents.

    6 pages and no mention of Margarito? He deserves all the hatred he gets unlike most of the fighters mentioned here.

    Jack Johnson is a pretty subjective choice.

    Most hated by WHITE folk, to be precise. I'm sure all the black folks thought he was just dandy.

    As a human being, Naseem Hamed is a major *****. Some boxers do the trash and brash talk for the entertainment value, but he seems to be arrogant and a **** out of the ring too.
