Nah, I'm not overrating Dawson at all. Roy would be gunshy as hell against Chad, just like he was against Calzaghe. And, Dawson is a hell of a lot bigger than Joe, too. Dawson is a BIG LH right now. He's grown into that weight quite nicely.
I can see where you're coming from because Dawson has a high workrate. I think Roy has an improved sense of confidence and fights smartly off the ropes. How would Dawson take the shots of Roy? Roy is still very fast and is much faster Dawson, something Dawson is not used to. How would Dawson deal with this? He doesn't go in a shell anymore and fights more off the ropes than his previous fights. Dawson being big has nothing to do with it. Size in Boxing doesn't mean anything at all.
He's obviously lost some from his best days but he still has plenty to trouble anyone around his weight class. What matters most about Jones is the fact that he needs his swagger to be at his best ! Look back at how he was talking before the Calzaghe fight...He was training with a lack of confidence in his ability to win that fight, it was so evident ! It wasn't because of Calzaghe being that good...more so because his psych wasn't where it is now ! It doesn't mean he would beat Calzaghe now but he sure would give him a better fight than last time !
He hasn't been going in a shell because he's been confident that he can beat his opponent. He would clam up against Dawson like he did against Calzaghe. I don't think Dawson would have many problems with Roy. Roy has never dealt with a good jab very well and Dawson's is very good when he's using it from the outside.
He's not close to what he was at his best but he's not ''shot'' by any means either ! To me a ''shot'' boxer would qualify as someone that can't even do 50% of what he use to in every department of his game. Roy lost much of his legs (movement & bounce), a little of his power and overall stamina, but still has his combos and good speed on his side. His confidence was ''shot'' after the Tarver II fight and in boxing that's a killer probably more than in any other sport.....
Let me ask you this, was Jones confident against Ajamu, Hanshaw, Trinidad? These were all easy opponents yet he still went into a shell for most of the fight. Now he doesn't do that anymore against the same or better competiton. He has his confidence back and Dawson will not strike fear into Roy. Roy is a different fighter than he was against Calzaghe. Roy has never dealt with a good jab well? You don't become as accomplished as Roy without dealing with a good jab. Dawson's only advantage is that he has a high workrate. His power won't trouble Jones nor will his speed nor durability. Dawson is not a swarmer neither. Like I said, Dawson is used to having an advantage in speed, he won't have it in this fight.
I for one certainly hope so, as he is the greatest showman of my generation. His thrumping of lacy shows he still shows he belongs with the best in the sport. I think he is ready, after his fight with green, to take on the winner of dawson/johnson or just fight hopkins straight away(doubt those 2 ever meet again because of pride) or maybe challenge adamek for the cruiserweight crown. Jones still has marketability and can still fight, plus he's very easy to negotiate with this days. So is roy back? Not the one we knew, but an older still entertaining and pliable one. Either way, the sport is better with roy jones. Whatever version.
he's gotta beat a legit lhw before u can really answer this question. i would guess that he could still pick up a belt and he's looked good but it's hard to tell as sheika and lacy aren't even legit lhw's let alone lhw contenders.
Well, with that being said. Why not drop to 168 and fight the winner of the super 6, or offer kessler a **** load of money to drop out of the tourney and fight at 170. Mikkel would probably do it because it would net him big bucks and a big scalp. If kessler beat roy, then he wold be in line for hopkins next. Roy jones and bernard hopkins on kess's resume would put him just right under joe's status, and make the dane financially set for life. Super 6 who?
