I watched a TV show about Rocky Marciano and saw a few of his rounds with Archie Moore. One thing I noticed was that unlike most of Marciano's other opponents, Archie Moore just would not go down, even under a barrage of some big punches. Consider that Rocky had shown one punch KO power his entire career.

I was also suprised to hear that Archie Moore started at MW but no-one would fight him there. Is this true?

Had Rocky lost his power, since the fight with Moore was his last fight, or was Moore's chin granite?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Not granite, as he was KO'd multiple times. He was definitely very durable, though.

Uh no. Marciano dropped him like 7 times . Basically Moore was a dead fighter around round 5 as Marciano wore and break him down with his power and constant punches. Moore was great defensively, always moving and making Rocky miss. But Rocky had a 1 punch knock down and a lot of other knockdowns in which Moore was saved by the bell in round 8 I believe. Moore was also down a lot against Duvulle and other fighters. So no, Moore had terrific defense but his chin was competent. Patterson landed a left hook that knocked him down to which Moore got up and was hammered away.

Thanks, I guess his head movement kept him in the fight, but some of those shots appeared to connect.

What about the fact that Moore was a blown up middleweight fighting gorillas (in the good sense) like Marciano?

It was a great TV show, "Behind the fights" with some footage of Maricano I had never seen. I like your avatar, Marciano is definitely one of my favourite fighters and he was a very gracious winner.

Marciano is my favorite fighter too. I think Moore was tough and had loads of heart. He got up a lot and I think he has some durability. His ability to absorb punishment is good, his chin is alright. I love that fight. Watching Marciano bomb at Moore constantly and to see Moore try firing back and catch Marciano who doesn't even seem fazed by his punches. Ultimate example of Marciano's ability to absorb and unleash bombs. What station was this show on? ESPN Classic? I'd like to see if I can catch it if possible.

I also think it's a bit deceptive since Moore was on the ropes a lot. That's extremely killer against Marciano. Moore took a lot of shots and he was dead tired toward the end of the fight. He was lucky he got saved by the bell on 2 occasions that Marciano would've likely finished him.

My avatar is Rocky with his dad on the right.

I also like your avatar too. But for much different reasons. :D

Have you ever seen the Frazier-Foreman fight? Oh wait you have! And a prime Frazier v Foreman fight is so tough to call that you wouldn't bet on it.

It's fun referring to a fighters worst performance. :good :hi:

    Foreman doesn't knock out Peralta.

    Liston doesn't KO Machen

    Louis doesn't KO Godoy

    Quarry KO's Shavers in 1

Cockell was the lard lad wasn't he? I felt sorry for him. Had some decent durability too.

It was on Star Sports in Asia, here is the link: http://telebisyon.net/Behind-the-Fights/

One thing about Rocky's chin was that he definitely wasn't afraid to trade with any boxer. He was cautious coming in at longer distance range with his unique head lowering to the right posture combined with some head movement. However, once he was within range he just opened up. The Rock took those two flash knockdowns during his entire career but jumped up immediately on both occassions. On other occassions he was hit with what appeared to be huge punhes but did not even flinch.

Agreed. Moore was down quite a bit. I'd say his chin was decent for a light heavy, and average for a heavy.

A strange fact; from boxrec, I've counted that Archie was knocked down 55 times in his career! Maybe more if I didn't count right. Is that a record for champion who was knocked down the most?

He didn't have the greatest of chins. Floyd Patterson knocked him out, so did Leonard Morrow in 1 round. Durelle had him down 3 or 4 times in the 1st round.

Moore was tough. He could be knocked down, thus him not having the greatest chin, but he was very tough and wouldn't stop fighting until he was finished.

He also had great defense and took a lot of the power off the punches with head movement and blocking ability.

The reason he was knocked down so many times? Look at the people he fought.

Moore also wasn't a "blown-up middle". He fought at 190-200 lbs very comfortably at that point of his career and had a hard time making the 175 lb limit.

Moore's was probably only a six out of ten. He just knew how to go with a punch or take it on top of the head.
