Not sure, maybe at #9 or 10. Very well rounded fighter you know, his offence would also rate at about #9 or 10. His defence was a bit more offensively orientated than the leaders of the pack (Locche, Benitez), objective being to counter punch at any opportunity - like Roberto Duran.

Welcome the forums. Great post. Yeah Moore referred to fighting Rocky like fighting a helicopter propeller (Or was it an airplane propeller).
oore had a solid chin, not a great one ... this brings up the point on Rocky. Marciano was not the biggest one shot hitter in history by a considerable shot ... he was a big hitter, very big for his size. His exceptional skill was he was the best conditioned big hitter .. He was so dedicated that he kept his power all fight, punch after punch. He really wore guys down as they could not keep up.
This is a lot. Perhaps that is a record among champions at any weight. I read some of Moore news paper reviews a while back. He was down quite a few times. I think Moore was one of those guys who went down often, but had good recuperation ability to get back up, and shake off the effects.
When you fight the amount of punchers Archie Moore did, you are bound to suffer more than a few knockdowns. Archie fought more punchers through a longer span of time than any boxer in history. Take Gene Tunney, a man who was only down once in 83 fights. Archie most likely took on 10x the amount of punchers Gene did, as gene spent a career taking on smaller "Boxer" types rather than punchers.
Good point but he was knocked out by light heavyweights ... he was also clobbered by Morrow, a fight after which many thought he was through ... Moore had an amazing and unusal career ... many twists and turns along the way ... great fighter, B chin, A- recooperative powers ...
Marciano looked like a man who would have a hard time killing a rabbit with a single punch later in his career. Exaggerated, sure. But, Randy Turpin, a MW, cleanly blasted Don Cockell out of there and Moore was stopped cleanly plenty of times. It was obvious Rocky's back problems were legitmate, and exploding out of that crouching position was simply becoming more difficult with time.
Archie Moore was iced in one round by some bum when he was a middleweight. If Michael Moorer has a glass chin because he was knocked out by George Foreman, Evander Holyfield, and David Tua then Archie Moore chin is glass too.
Moore would have never beaten the count from Dempsey's combination on Tunney in the second fight. Dempsey carried his power well past his retirement. Hence Tunney's chin was tested on the highest level. If you were to ask most seasoned boxing guys who had a better chin between Tunney and Moore, they would side with Tunney. Down 1x or down 55 times? This should be a no-brainier.
