I honestly cannot remember what he has said of Tommy since though...As how he felt about him after their fight.
I do remember upon retirement, he stated that Hagler hit him the hardest, which I always found pretty strange.
Duran, started out at 119lbs settled IN at 135. beat ray, others where fake with ray. got smoked by a giant named tommy career over no! beat moore almost beat hagler in a 15 rounder. that iswhy lbflb Duran is the 3rd best fighter ever he came back after a deadly ko. by a lightheavy trapped in a welters body.
I always thought Duran respected Hearns. He never seemed to play mind games with him and even seemed slightly intimidated in the build up to their fight. I have huge respect for Duran not only because of his great career and the great victories he achieved, but for taking this fight that was basically as wrong for him stylistically as I could ever imagine. Guys like Duran are making me re-evaluate the way I assess fighters careers to pretty much disregard losses completely. The desire to hang onto ones "0" these days is probably the reason we'll never get another guy like Roberto again who'll take on all comers at all weights. Legend is an overused word but is so fitting for these 2 fighters.
Me! NUTHUGGER?? ****in YEH big Time:yep What a character Duran is, we'll never see his like again, honest as they come, no bull**** from this man as what yer see is what yer get, ducked no one & for all those losers out there that don't like him i suggest yer get gene pool checked as yer've got the VICTIM gene in yer:smoke
A brief editorial from a Duran fan more sensible(? honest?) than Duranimal. I am not sure that Duran's willingness to fight Hearns was courage or obliviousness. Duran was a tough hombre who did not have a normal man's fear in him -despite what Manny Steward has said. The fact is, Duran suffered from a disease that many pugilists suffer from, only more so. He suffered from the delusion that he didn't need to train, and that time had no claim on him. He actually believed that Tommy was a "chicken" because of the Leonard fight and assumed that one shot from a stone hand and that would be that. To discount Hearns' devastating power, reach, height, and especially speed ...was just plain goofy. Someone should have shown him the Cuevas fight. The two are quite friendly nowadays. PS/ I for one am not so sure that Duran wouldn't have rematched Hearns at middleweight. Duran was campaigning and after Barkley took out Hearns, Duran got a shot. If Hearns stopped Barkley on cuts, and was willing to fight Duran, I am pretty damn sure that Duran would've fought him again.
Duran was scheduled to fight the winner of the 2nd Leonard/Hearns fight. he said he would fight either one. I also saw Duran say that Hearns had no shot against Hagler leading up to the Hagler/Hearns fight.
The problem with Duran-Hearns II after the Barkley fights was that given the nature of their first fight there was VERY little interest or talk about a rematch.
Surprise surprise....... Duran really runs Toney close for the excuses he has for each loss. At least they weren't stomach cramps this time. atsch
He made some feeble excuse about partying to hard & Hearns punch hitting him on the top of the head - as opposed to the chin - & all the booze & woman poured out. He says he thought Hearns was a chicken because of the Leonard fight also. Duran is one of my fav`s but he has to be also one of the worst losers of all time in any sport.
