Was/Is Hector Camacho an All-Time Great?

One of my favorite boxers from recent memory, but who else here thinks he is an ATG or a potential member of the international boxing hall of fame? The guy was a stud in the 1980's, though always in the shadow of Julio Cesar Chavez, he did manage to beat the likes of Vinny Paz, Edwin Rosario, Rafael Limon, and Howard Davis.

He struggled a bit in the next decade losing to all the best of his era (trinidad, de la hoya, chavez, etc) but did manage to beat washed up legends like Leonard and Duran. I say he makes it to the Hall-of-fame anyway but falls short of being an ATG like the Chavez and Whitakers of his day.

 

Don't think he's exactly "great", but he sure could have been, were it not for the Rosario BoogeyMan.

 

Very true, that Rosario fight really turned him the other direction. I still think he possessed all the skills and tools to be a great fighter.

 

He was the greatest pure boxer of the last 40 years.

 

like you said it yourself not an ATG. but he defintely deserves a spot in the hall of fame. and i believe it was a very good fighter. i rank him just below the all time greats and way above the " just good fighters".

yes of course. Combine his style with his physical gifts and you have a dominant fighter. It is my belief that prime for prime, he would have outsped and outslicked Pernel had Pernel the misfortune to come along 2 or 3 years sooner.

But that's okay otherwise we might not have had the opportunity to see Sweat Pea blossom into the great fighter that he was as well.

So because of Pernel's incredibly good fortune, we have ourselves two all time greats. Both left handers and both in the same division.

Pernel who did everything almost as well as Hector, lacked the big punch and never would have been able to get Hector's respect. Hector would have unleashed punches too quick for the eye to follow and greatly reduced Pernel's effectiveness as a boxer. Hector walks away with the decision.

Ol' Camacho ought to be a SURE THING for the "Halls" down the road.....

I'd say so. Lightning fast, and practically invincible 1982-86. Did not lose until 1990, and even that was disputed.

If by boxing you mean a constant runner who threw pitty pat shoeshine combinations that were all flash and little power. Then yes, if that is what you call boxing, he was as pure as the driven snow.

 

Haugen beat him, Rosario changed him into a shrinking violet, Chazez tortured him. And yes, Pea would silence any discussion of who is the better boxer.
