Okay, be more serious... This thread is obviously a big fat paradox... how can u steal 0's and still called a journeyman? I mean if you beat quality unbeaten fighters, you are obviously not a journeman anymore, and if you beat bums with a padded "0", it really doesn't mean much. Glen Johnson, a fighter with many losses beat Thomas Ulrich, Daniel Judah (robbed) and Chad Dawson (debated by a large amout of fans an experts). Danny Williams beat a bunch of previously perfect guys too (Meehan, Harrison, Skelton, Gammer, Airich) but because of that, he obviously can't called a journeyman.
Quintana took Paul Williams and that columbian guy's 0's Both were supposed to be walking all over Quintana but he beat them both convincingly. Now since Quintana is off teh radar i would classify him a journeyman. I would say by far the most talented journeyman right now. On a good night he can give anyone hell.
Demetrice King has some prominent ones. Dropped the first loss on Bowie Tupou, Bermaine Stiverne and Ray Olubowale, all of whom were very highly touted prospects under big promoters at the time. Zuri Lawrence has also defeated a number of touted prospects (not all of whom had zeros, but all of whom were riding long undefeated streaks), including Albert Sosnowski, Paolo Vidoz and King Ipitan.
This is more or less what I'm talking about. Guys who demonstrate a pattern of upsetting some of these youngsters. You take a guy like Brian Vera, and it's different. Vera caught lightning in a bottle one night, and the next time out looked like **** against a very similar fighter.
Nice one. :good And as far as whether someone "is" or "isn't" a journeyman, I don't think the label has to mean at all that someone isn't a good fighter. It just means you took some hard knocks along the way, and were rarely if ever protected like a blue chip prospect.
Yep. Ls are going to happen to most fighters thrown into these kind of spots, it doesn't even have much to do with overall talent or ability at that point.
Good thread. Can't really think of any good ones of the top of my head. Will have to give it a think. Can only really think of Friday Ahunanya (24-5-3). Not that he was known for it but his last two fights have been wins over Shane Cameron (19-0) in Camerons back yard and Alonzo Butler (26-0-1).
Michael Sprott (31-14) is also a very respectable journey man. Has taken Rene Dettweiller's and Cengiz Koc's O's and whilst they weren't undefeated he also beat men he wasn't favoured to beat like Timo Hoffman (22-1 at the time), Danny Williams and Audley Harrison. His KO of Harrison should get everyones respect and gratitude and it should ensure that Sprott never has to pay for a drink again.
Perhaps Emanuel Augustus or Baldomir? They are journeyment, but have a high level on their best days. A story about special journeymen: Soren Sondergaard was a great prospect - undefeated and everything. Technically well-founded and also hard-hitting. Then he moved up a weightclass and had a tune-up fight ... with Augustus!! It was meant to be an easy fight and he had not trained very much... so Augustus gave him hell. An even fight and Sondergaard got the win, but was bashed up. Then in another fight he took Baldomir as an easy opponent. Those two fights against journeymen made him loose faith and he stopped fighting soon after - not realizing that these two were 'special' journeymen and perhaps he should not despair for having trouble with them.
I did not mention Augustus because, although he has a journeyman's record, it is hard to consider him a journeyman. At his best he's just to damn good. To me he was more of a "gatekeeper."
Darnell Boone. He hasn't taken zeros from any known guys, but he's been close with a lot of guys and just almost took Craig McEwan's.
