August 22, 1969 Ruben Olivares defeated Lionel Rose of Australia to become the WBA and WBC bantamweigth champion. The fight ended 2:24 seconds into the fifth of a scheduled fifteen rounds. I was wonderinf if anybody saw this fight or any of his later fights. Please comment on El Puas.

From the film available certainly so. Lionel is probably my favorite alltime Aussie fighter..Extremely impressive athletic talent and natural ability, with some of the best handspeed of any bantam Ive seen. Certainly up there with the best Australian fighters Ive seen on film and holds the greatest win by an Aussie fighter ever.
Rose was a very, very good fighter IMO. He just came up against a beast. One of the most impressive Bantam wins of all time IMO; very, very good. Glad someone brought it up :good
Think i'll watch it then myself now. Game he was Lionel, for the stoppage it just looks like an 'oh this is just too much' type thing.
If there's a point of naming Australia greatest Champion universally recognised, Lionel is the man. He was never a true Bantamweight during his Championship days and endured immense battles with the scales. Unlike Jeff Fenech who reportedly JUMPED on fixed scales, Lionel defended his title only once in Australia. Taking the crown in Japan against a Japanese Champ, with Japanese judges, returning to face a Japanese contender, facing Rudkin in Oz with Ray Mitchell in rirdiculous favour, upsetting the Mexicans in LA against Castillo (a classier BOXER than Olivares) and then squaring off with Olivares in a weight drained condition, Lionel was a remarkable Bantam. Should he have been a Bantam after facing Sakurai or Rudkin?? I dont think so. For such a well built Bantam to face difficulty when moving up the weight classes at a reasonably young age, I think Lionel was worn out pre-maturely. A combination of booze and weight-drains. IMO, Lionel is the best Aussie fighter stylistically. A brilliant boxer when strong.... 15 rounds at the weight was not his game at Championship level. A move in weight classes early on may have changed the books... a lot speculation on my behalf.
Thank You.... It was the first time I hade ever seen Olivares fight. He was better than I thought he was hard to hit. He moves up nn my list of ATG's Really though the best part of the post is the video I have to thank Teeto!!!
