Toney - only experience he's had of 'ripped' is that of his pants! Dude can fight though, that is beyond question.

I posted a pic of Danny "Little Red" Lopez because I think he was the ultimate example of this topic. He looked really scrawny but he was always in tremendous shape, and with just a couple exceptions, usually got stronger as the fight wore on. He is also #26 on Ring Magazine's list of the top 100 all time great punchers. He ruled over a pretty strong featherwieght division for nearly 4 years, and it took no less a fighter than one Salvador Sanchez to dethrone him.

Great and Elite are two different categories.

    Examples of great:

    Diaz, Maligaggi, Kessler, Cotto, etc.

Elite: Calzaghe, RJJ (prime), Pac, JMM, Hopkins, Marquez.

Very few guys are Elite, most champs are just Great.

Look at those names again - doesn't something stick out to you? All of the 'elite' fighters - they have had time to seal their legacies. Your 'great' category points to people who who have yet to define their careers, certainly Cotto and Kessler could go on to be in the elite class, especially with the upcoming fights that both men have.

    Larry Holmes!
Even when he was in supreme shape he looked soft.

Im the same. I run everyday, eat decent food and do weight training most days, yet while i look stocky, im not fully ripped and never have been. My bro does less than me in terms of calorie loss exercising, slightly more on the muscles, and he has less fat and is more ripped. He eats like a horse too, its got to be genetics. Calzaghe is a fighter who springs to my mind. The guy looked healthy and had a good pysique, but he was never ripped.

Big George was never "cut". Tyson always looked solid like a granite statue, but never really cut like Holyfield for example.

Calzaghe looks like the ice cream guy that comes around my house every week. He doesn't look to be in shape, but sure as heck is. There is this guy that does yard work around my town. He only rides a bicycle and only does manual labor. That dude helped me load a riding mower the other day and I swear, he was at least twice as strong as me. Incredible strength for his weight and build.

Genetics have everything to do with it. My black homie eats Wendys all the time, trains like **** and walks around with an 8 pack of abs. I train much harder and I'm more conscience of what I eat and I ain't nearly as ripped.

Genetics plays a lot to do with it, but when people say "they can't get ripped" that's not true (unless there's some sort of glandular problem).
It just may not be worth the extra effort needed. But if someone REALLY wanted to, they could lower their body fat enough to be ripped.

Right, like Golota, Klitschkos and Eli Dixon.
