Great video! Every time some idiot tells me that boxing is just watching one guy beat up another guy I always tell them about the defense. And these guys were geniuses. There's a reason Willie Pep went 229-11-1.
in a 26 year time span... there would not even be 241 worthy opponents to face (probably 220 including rematches and stuff) thats why i think having a blown up record like that is over rated.....
What?? You've got to be ****ing kidding me. Pep fought all the top guys, and often more than once. He started out almost 70-0 before losing, and then went roughly another 60-0 after that. You could say the same thing about Henry Armstrong and Sugar Ray Robinson's records. Overrated and padded. Or are you going to tell me that somehow their records are different?
do you understand what im saying though? like in the past 10 years at welter floyd - odlh - mosley - cotto - margarito - williams - berto - clottey - vernon forrest - baldomir - zab - mayorga - vargas - cintron - pacquaio i know i'm definitely missing some names but thats more or less the best welterweights in the past 7 years or so..... so are you going to tell me that in another 19 years you can think of 80 more worthy adversaries? spanning from like 1980 to now?
He got great reflexes and speed but the dancing and **** we saw in the video x2 is just showboating and not really defense.
Were a lot of the guys that the old-time greats fought club fighters? Sure. But they also fought every other great fighter of the era, and usually over and over. The sheer odds of fighting as many fights as Pep, Robinson and Armstrong (even JCC) fought and winning as many as they did is unbelievable. To only screw up 11 times in 240 is beyond imagination, even if a lot of cab drivers were thrown in there.
im not saying that they didnt fight the best..... but im just saying atleast 120 of those guys had to be c level fighters.... at best edit: but i mean... to only screw up 11 times i dont think is that crazy..... if your a top tier guy you should only mess up that many times..... i wish there was some way to guage the actual level of competition... it would be a nice figure to see... i've always doubted guys with 120-150+ wins but if i was proven wrong i would have no problems with that
The best defensive fighters I have seen is Whitaker and Benitez so they are number 1 and 2 in that order. I know many people say Pep's the best but I haven't seen enough footage of him. Locche is great and fun to watch when he is inviting his opponent to hit him and what adds the fun even more is that he looks like an old, bald, out of shape man who doesn't belong there in the first place.
Sure. But you're forgetting that 70% of anyone's record is padding. Look at any great fighter of any era (RJJ or Calzaghe comes to mind, though there are certainly others). If they fight more than once a year or two, there are going to be hacks thrown in there. Especially early on. And some champs make a career of making mediocre defenses of their belt. But I understand your point and it's a valid one. The old guys had to fight every couple of months, at least, to make a living.
Great stuff. But where is Hopkins? Well, i know why he wasn't included. Because his defense was as textbook as it gets and he didn't rely on reflexes or extraordinary raw talents like most of the guys on the video did. He relied on footwork, distance, anticipation, tucked chin, etc. He's not flashy but the older version of Hopkins is about as tough as anyone to hit in his generation with a clean shot.
