Even Boehm urged him to leave Canada. "The people that wanted him to stay were doing nothing for him, only for themselves," Boehm says. On April 24, 1989, Lewis signed with Maloney.

"I knew I was going to get used in boxing," Lewis says. "I just didn't want to get used too much. I wanted to control my destiny. I couldn't sec being thrown in the ring before I was ready. Frank allowed me more freedom, more say."

I dont know why he didnt just fight out of America, surely it would have earned him the same kind of money he would have got in England and even more exposure. I think he genuinely came back to England because thats where he wanted to fight out of. Either way he was born in London, grew up in London, holidayed in Canada and came back to fight out of London so hes English. End of story.

Convenience...when it suited him he claimed to be Canadian....as he did before the mooted Kirk Johnson match when he said several times it was going to be the first heavyweight title fight between two Canadians.

    Spot on!

Lewis is not daft, Britain was crying out for a Heavyweight, he filled the void.

He loves Canada, so it seems in all the books I've read on it, and he didn't particularly seem to have to many good things to say about his time in England as a kid. And I'm not surprised, since its full of wankers.

Grew up? He lived from 12 to 24-25 in Canada. He spent his formative years in Canada and competed in 2 Olympic games for Canada. He is British/Canadian of Jamaican descent. English? If it wasn't for the easy lucre of the British he never would've left Canada. He was 24-25 and went to a place where he didn't know anybody to further his boxing career. From the interviews I've read he spends most of his time in Jamaica so is he only Jamaican now?

He was always going to get more exposure by being a "British Heavyweight" and yes he did appear to be more Canadian than British during his earlier career,BUT lets not forget how hostile us Brits were towards him in the beginning, the Gary Mason saga, the Beating of "our Frank".
Fact is though,he's British end of.:good

    Flag of convenience imo.

Once he was champion he hardly fought in the UK, he lived if i am correct in Jamaica and the US.

I remember when he won all the belts he said he would fight in the UK for the fans and he went and gave us Francois Botha:-(

Because the US at the time was stacked at heavyweight. LL would have been just another contender hence why he came back here to make a name for himself and fight off these shores. He was about as British as a Burrito.

Uh,Jay,is this just a rant against Yanks,or do you believe that Noukstar is American because 3 or 4 of the expressions that he used are never spoken in America?Nobody in America says,"spot on","daft",or "wankers".These are expressions that are never used in America by Americans.,but by Britons in Britain.
