This crap is some kind of old. Joe is retired . . . so leave him in peace.

 

Not possible to leave him in peace. The words "Joe Calzaghe" raises many interesting discussions: Incredibly talented, Overprotected, Phenomenal stamina, Avoided the best, Intelligent fighter with many skills in his arsenal, lack of ambition - o.m.g the list is endless.

 

It hards to respect a guy who fights nothing but journeymen his entire career until he gets older and wants a big pay day. So he ditches his promoter and fights Hopkins and Jones past their respective primes. He wins both by simply throwing a million slaps around. He was capable of throwing a couple bombs a fight, but couldn't do so with regularity because of his brittle hands.

Either way, it's annoying because he never came over to the US to fight the Jones and Hopkins at their best. History will remember him for beating but both, but the reality is in both of their primes, Joe would got ko'd 2x.

There really is no need for this kind of attitude towards Calzaghe. Why do people get so upset at the mention of his name?

Lets remember, it wasn't Joe's fault he didnt fight either Bhop or Jones in their prime, Jones quite blatantly avoided him, not too sure about Hopkins.

And I don't see how you can say Bhop would have knocked him out "in his prime." The way I see it, Bhop has never been p4p no.1, yet he remains at no.3 to this day. Is he even out his prime? Was his slaughtering of Pavlik not evidence enough to demonstrate his retention of pretty much 100% his skill (even at his age)?

Put it this way, when Joe decided to fight Bhop over Pavlik, he got an incredible amount of stick from the boxing community about how they all thought he was "selecting the weaker opponent," then when Bhop goes and destroys Pavlik after, people then start shifting their views towards "Joe should have fought Dawson."

The only thing we can conclude from the Calzaghe era is, no matter what he did, it wasn't good enough. At least, not for some...

 

Roy Jones had his chance and got battered.Same for Hopkins.

****...come on guys let the calzaghe hate/love threads end. this does absolutely nothing but end up pissing of both camps, the calzaghe fans and the jones fans. this isn't even a boxing thread to be honest. it's a tiger beat article that happens to be about boxers. it has nothing to do with resume and talents: it's fans going after each for no real reason with one fighter retired and the other well on his way. this isn't the highlander...they don't have to take each other's quickening. it's over.

 

I don't think it is that to be honest. People have problems with Calzaghe for no qualitative reason, other than the fact that they are bitter.

I'm from the UK myself, and had Calzaghe lost to Jones over 12 rounds, I wouldn't really have cared too much. Why? Because Jones is an amazing fighter and is probably my personal favorite of all time. He's 40 yrs old and to push himself through 5 rounds with that hellacious cut demonstrates the heart of a lion, and more recently, he displayed his masterful, unique hand speed/combos against Lacy.

It's one thing to be loyal, it's another thing to be plain arrogant. Jones will go down in history as the better fighter, and rightfully so, but that still doesnt deter from the fact that Joe was a brilliant champion and deserves credit, from everyone...
