Armstrong twice went the distance with Ceferino Garcia, who probably hit harder than any of the names you listed, and also with Ray Robinson. I don't see why there would be so much reason to doubt whether Armstrong could do what Duran did. I think the question could just as well be asked whether Duran could do what Armstrong did.

There's no way of knowing that. Duran seemed no less likely to be blown out going into that match than Armstrong would.

I'm not so sure that it was increased punch resistance in Duran's case. It may have been for him and others, but I think I'd tend towards experience/cleverness and style adjustments as more of an explanation. I would also emphasize the speed of smaller guys. Hearns has more of a chance of knocking a LHW out cold than Klitschko. Speed kills.

Good points. Duran's lightweight challengers weren't the stuff of legend overall but beating Buchanan at 21 really gives us a shining glimpse into his ability to handle any LW ever -including Ike. Duran circa 1978 had too much sophisticated brutality and an ability to evade shots while crashing in his own for Ike. I believe that he sees and raises Ike in too many areas to lose there.

Hector Thompson was physically stronger than Duran and could hit pretty good too. Mamby was an intellectual, DeJesus, Kobayashi, Lampkin...
He's got solid wins as a LW but I agree that we didn't see his best until Leonard I... I can't think of a more formidable fighter than that.

 

I think Duran's reign at lightweight was only slightly weaker than Carlos Monzon's.

Anyway, here goes my vote: Very, very close fight, but I choose Duran... for a whisker.

Of course here we are talking about a prime, full trained, full focused and committed Duran, a la Montreal.

Any lesser version of Duran wouldn't cut the mustard against Armstrong, in my opinion

his relentless and his ''come forward'' pressure style all over you will cause Armstrong alot of problems.

Monzon beat 4 great fighters,at least 2 of whom were slipping .

Plus 2 of them were above their optimum weight

Duran beat 2 greats at the weight ,but both were prime.
Not too much daylight between them imo.

 

If he just does this then I say he has less of a chance.

Duran would need to mix it up to make the win clear. If he just trades and swarms all over Hank he's fighting right into Hank's hands. As a pure 'swarmer/aggressor' it must be arguable that Armstrong is as good if not better than Duran.

It's Duran's nuances and different paces/ranges that make him as great as he is IMO.

 

Duran had a great LW reign. Not as good as someone like Carlos Ortiz (at least in terms of the quality of his opposition), but the fighters he beat are much more underrated than overrated IMO. Mostly because of the strength of the era and their lack of credentials because of it. Guys like Villa, Thompson, Suzuki, etc were all very good fighters.

Duran and no ifs or buts, Duran would win. Armstrong had better stamina, but that was it. Duran had the edge in anything else. Duran by decision or TKO.
