Look, Calzaghe let himself down by never venturing to fight the best. He was content with fighting bums all his career, and never truly putting his talent to the test against the best. How he never managed to cross paths with Toney, Hopkins, Roy (and loads more I'm sure), we will never know. True fans will always have the following notion when thinking of Calzaghe's legacy:

"Talented and skillfull boxer, but his true greatness will never be known as he never fought a single elite fighter in their prime. "

Joe's handlers understood his severe limitations.

woe is you your fav fighter is over the hill sorry joe faught him past his due date where were they when joe was in his prime fact jones just beat who left hook lacey? he wants to fight danny green then what bhop last fight was a victory over pavlik? the middleweight champ? funny how you dismiss your own guy jones as past his prime when who did you bet on to win? don't say you didn't back jones. if hopkins win over pavlik doesn't make him elite.

I'm a jones fan and a Joe fan. But Joe beating Jones or nard doesn't frustrate me. It was a good win. What frustrates me is that we never had the chance to see Joe at his best, testing himself against the best. he faced true greats past their best. I gave him the Nard fight but by a razor thin margin and IMO, his BEST wins were against Jones, Nard and Eubanks.....I'll throw Kessler in there although Mikkel is not on the same level as Joe, Jones, Nard or Eubanks....but at least Mikkel was a prime fighter and a champion at the time. I just wish Joe cared more about testing himself during his best years, facing real challenges than focusing on keeping himself undefeated.

who would you have had him fight then, ? if you say to prove himself, he had to fight jones and bernard sooner, youre just grasping on to what your idea of what jones and bernard were. surely you can see that during the "prime" of jones and bernard they couldn't fight everyone on the scene. things must happen in due course. all i'm saying is if youre a jones fan or a bernard fan, don't be calling out champions of the present ie. ademek or dawson, and on the other hand say your fighter was past his prime when he faught joe. "prime" is a word to describe a fighter who's prepared and ready. lotta fighters bernard #1 enjoys the fact that he's older now. he couldn't beat roy the first time they faught. he believes he could beat him now. why? he would say because now he's smarter.
calzaghe had the fights with roy and bernard. who would you rather he have faught. i could say this "roy was great in his prime he faught bernard and toney, but he never faught calzaghe in that time period"

Real fans of RJJ don't give a **** about Calzaghe or his win over Jones, any real fan of RJJ knows that wasn't prime RJJ and not close. There is a reason Calzaghe thought it was ridiculous to travel back when Jones was in his prime but quickly changed his mind when everyone was beyond old and shot.
