of course he didn't fight calzaghe in his prime so we'll never know how good he was. the only clues that we have as to what would have happened in a jones vs calzaghe prime for prime fight is the fight they did have we all saw that.
you should insist to be held to the highest standards what when roy is still fighting therefore conjecting a capability to be prime to fight whomever he chooses left to fight.

Bryant Brannon was one tough SOB. He deserves credit for how he fought.

And this is another example of how aware Roy was. He steps back before the final flurry basically asking the ref if the ref needs to see more. Did the same thing with Clinton Woods.

Just shows how conscious he was at all times in the ring when his reflexes permitted it. Guy literally lived in his own world.

he really didn't want to hurt people in the ring. dominate and humiliate sure, but not hurt

Roy always made it very clear he could do a Montell Griffin performance...but in his own somewhat twisted demented logic, People paid for 12 rounds of action and felt a knock out early never gave them their money's worth.

I thought that line he had in the Calzaghe buildup where he compared his prime self to a jazz artist was pretty telling. He really was improvising in there, and he definitely enjoyed his own show.

I don't want to start giving fighters passes for fighting lesser opposition, but the things Roy could do with B level fighters or worse were just incredible. I see some of that in Gamboa, but hardly anybody else since Roy's prime.

And then there's what he could do to complete bums... :rofl

Can't put it any better than that.

I've definitely laughed at that one enough times to have a ticket to hell waiting.

Not taking anything away from a lot of past greats, such as Ray Leonard or Haggler he was simply incredible to watch.

I'd say the respect was mutual also. Roy had a lot of guys run from him and pretty much refuse to engage. Brannon came to give it his best shot.

The intriguing thing about the Brannon fight was before it, Roy held an open like...I guess a Q & A session would be accurate where he in detail spoke about giving opportunities to fighters who wanted to take fights, not chasing guys down for fights and not being picky as to who opposed him. He also talked a bit about the criticisms he was getting about making fights dull or interesting. My guess is Roy just wanted to hammer home his point with Brannon but no more, It's obvious he did what he had to do and then wanted it ended as soon as possible.

Roy was a weird guy like that.

yeah i remember that q&a. he said the only person who would ACTUALLY fight him was hopkins. everyone else bailed. and yeah roy was almost more interesting in entertaining than hurting

I mean in general Roy was just weird. He would say things and do things that would make people say "Wow..this guy is a joke" and act like he didn't like boxing then turn around and remind everyone how much he loved this sport and how much it meant to him. Just a complicated man.
