sadly it is. especially the ones that chose louis do it neither out of p4p nor h2h considerrations , their reasons are : longevity (the war helped louis in that matter) , number of defences (most of the time , against an overrated oposition , to say : not that good , also his sd over walcott is a robbery , which virtually reduces 1 from it) , and some other folkloristic reasons ('democracy needed his fists'). louis , lewis , holmes , corbett (especially) are so much overrated , they are like catholic church saints in here. after they're enshrined - they are a taboo , concensus , holly-cows. both louis and lewis (and wlad) lacked the score settlement factor which motivated fighters like : langford , joe walcott (barbados) marciano , charles , joe walcott (jersey) , joey maxim , srr , young peter jackson and theis era's : mosley , forrest , tarver , griffin , mccallum , toney , holyfield . now , THESE ARE warriors. forrest not so much really but he did have the score-settlement property which i love.
1. foreman 2. ali 3. lewis but lewis would beat the the first and the second. and the greatest of all time would be a mixture with only strenghts of the both klitschkos
Dont relly see how Holmes is 3rd. Underrated when champ, but OVER rated today imo. Holmes failed to do a lot of stuff as champ. Didnt clean out his era. There were still alpha champs running around during it, I give Tyson credit in this department. Holmes miss a shot against a fight of many of the top fighters of his era, and should have points taking away fro that. After a close fight, REFUSE the rematch. Tim nearly upsetting Holmes, and did he get a rematch?? Nope. A lot of close fights vs jourymen didnt have rematchs. 3 level of foes. People ,may brag and say Rocky fought no one, and I dont agree, but I rank the likes of Walcott, Charles and Moore over the 11-0 type of fighters Holmes fought on a yearly basics. Holmes fought more of these type of fights than any other champ. These guys had ZERO chance to win, and when Holmes looks amazing crushing these rookies, we are suppose to be amazing with that?? These are the main points I have against Holmes as 3rd. Me, I put Rocky Marciano. Not because of the zero mind you. He fought the best out there, beat them, clean out his era and retired on top. Also gave rematchs to close fights. I also think the Rock is underated head to head. I can see in my mind how the Rock would beat Holmes imo. The right hand, and Holmes being a bit lazy in the later rounds.
Yeah, good to see someone else sees the same thing I do. Larry is almost ALWAYS in the top 6-7 on lists, but everyone goes on about how he is the most under rated ATG HW of all time. Not giving Weaver, Spoon rematches and then simply not fighting the best fighters of his title reign takes him out of the top 5 on my list. Thomas, Dokes, Coatzee, Page etc. were a step above everyone on Holmes title resume (excepting Weaver and Spoon who he refused to rematch). How people can ignore this and put him in the top 3 anyway is beyond me.
I can honestly say that I have never understood why Holmes is held in such high regard on this site. I am concious that many of the people who rate him highly are far better informed about his career than myself. Personaly I just don't see it.
I guess I don't see it either! Larry was a great heavyweight, but there have been quite a few great heavyweights! I can't even find a spot for him in my top 10 list, but I do list him at #12. Maybe I am missing something about him?
True. But his late career really gives his claim a push though. He looked good against a prime Holyfielfd considering he was over 40, and his win over Mercer was truly brilliant.
