Can Roy defeat the King, or will the King reign supreme?

Monzon, probably by knockout, possibly late.

Roy is overated at MW. He proved almost nothing. He has 25-0 when he left that division behind forever. The first ten of those fights, he was hugely over-protected by his father. His reputation, in the main, is for his impressive display against Bernard Hopkins. Hopkins had completed ONE 12-rounder at this point. One. Not such a great win.

Monzon has the timing, the economy and the punching to do Jones harm. TKO13.

Jones speed, footwork, timing, movement, reactions, power made him untouchable in his prime. Jones embodied hitting without being hit against great fighters Hopkins (where he was injured) and Toney. Monzon is slower than both of these men and easier to hit than both.

This really gives Jones massive advantages. Which punch of Monzon's is actually going to land? No way that slow jab isn't getting slipped and countered over with rights and Monzon's game is based around the jab, which makes it a stylistic nightmare for him. All the same Monzon needs to work his jab in doubles/trebbles and try to get it off to the body aswell as the head.

Lets look at the case for Monzon, people say Monzon will 'out time' Jones, Monzon fans are hoping he'd out time him because they know he's getting outsped, if anything Jones has the better timing. Seriously Monzon hasn't been in with anyone close to the speed of Jones. Monzon usually had height/reach advantages he used well, but here he has no advantage

The biggest tool Monzon has is workrate/pressure, making Jones fight at a pace he may not be comfortable at. Jones had incredible stamina in his prime though but Monzon needs to force the pace to force mistakes. He needs to double trebble jabs, keep the 1-2s coming and get inside to work the body. All the time he'll either be getting beat to the punch or countered hard. This won't be a happy day at the office for him

Jones UD 9-3 (OOps just realised it was 15 rounds 11-4)

Monzon stops Jones in the 14th round...tko. I've always made this prediction...Jones dazzles Monzon at times in the early rounds and even rattles him .....but things take a turn in the 10th or 11th and get worse for Jones in the uncharted (for him) deep waters of rounds 12 thru 14, and Monzon decks him twice in the 14th for a tko victory.

In the end, it's probably not a fair fight.

Expecting 25-0 padded record Jones to take on 75-3 undispute MW champion Monzon...negative.

That same Jones won every round against Toney in his next fight and had beat Hopkins who wouldnt lose for another 12years. So in 26fights Jones has beaten 2 men better than anyone Monzon beat

78 fights doesn't mean Monzon suddenly becomes a big puncher, because he wasnt 1, it doesn't make him more skillfull than Jones because he wasn't that either

There's allot to be said for youth and skill

Roy over 12 jabs, shoeshines and runs to victory. I honestly believe he is one guy who is stylistic hell of Carlos and could beat him over this distance.

Over 15...its a bit unfair. Like McGrain said you have probably the best example of a middleweight on film forging an absolutely amazing career completely at this one weight vs a young, protected one time titlist.
Carlos was the ultimate ring general who knew exactly what do to, when to do it and how hard to push it when in a 15 round fight.

I picture this fight over 15 rounds and cant see how Carlos loses it...Cause in with the one world class opponent Roy went in the rounds with at middleweight the latter stages of the fight is where Nard did his best work and thats no great gauge for how Roy goes going 3 rounds longer against one of the best to fight in the era of 15 x 3's.

Griffith is absolutley a better MW than young Hopkins, and he's not the only one that Monzon fought that I would peak to beat this one 12 rounder fighter.

Toney was severely weight-drained - however much you might not want him to be, yes more than usual according to what I have - Toney was also not at 160, however much you might want it to have been for the puroposes of this discussion, Toney was nothing like as good as Monzon, however much you might want him to be.

28 is YOUNG? Have you actually watched this version of Hopkins or not? Hopkins would outbox that Griffith systematically, actually that version of Hopkins may just lay it on Griffith because he actually went for the KO back then

Toney's weight draining excuse was just that an excuse, he always weight drained. Do you really think Toney is not going to get in better shape than usual for the best opponent hes faced in his career?

I say Roy utilizes his speed to full effect here, outboxing the slow-stalking Monzon by way of UD.
