i'm not talking about these ABC trinkets. i'm talking about the lineal middleweight championship. let us analyze pavlik's predecessor's and compare them with pavlik's reign:

Jermain Taylor (2005-2007) - first 2 title defenses were against two top 3 P4P fighters in hopkins and wright. this easily trumps anything pavlik has done.

Bernard Hopkins (2001- 2005) - no explanation needed. defended against his #1 contender countless times and is a middleweight legend.

James Toney (1991-1993, vacated title) - also defended his middleweight title many times against dangerous contenders such as mccallum (2x) and reggie johnson.

Michael Nunn (1989-1991) - great middleweight champion -- made numerous defenses of his title.

"Sugar" Ray Leonard (1987, vacated title) - no explanation needed... he's sugar ray leonard.

Marvin Hagler (1980-1987) - also no explanation needed, one of the great middleweights in history defending is title against guys like hearns and duran

    Alan Minter (1980)
    - BINGO. pavlik is the worst middleweight champ since alan minter.

let me set this straight. kelly pavlik has made 2 middleweight defenses in the past 2 years against downright pitiful opposition and he has failed to fight his number one contender in abraham within that time span. now he has another dangerous, top contender in paul williams but it sounds like pavlik has been hitting the bottle and getting into bar fights and also avoiding williams. we as boxing fans should not stand this BS.

Minter was better than Pavlik. I'd say Taylor was worse, though. Taylor was pretty much all athleticism with mediocre skills and a simple boxing brain. A severe black mark on Hopkins's career that he wasn't able to beat him, even at that stage.

if you were to take a combination of actual middlweight defenses along with their head to head, then JT is better than pavlik imo

Pavlik is not retired so how can you judge him right now???:huh The man is like 26 years old, and has many more fights to fight.

His MW defenses were about as unconvincing as I've ever seen from a "champion". Combine that with the fact that he lost both fights to Pavlik and I don't quite get your point. Taylor is a mediocre fighter, through and through. He'll be nothing more than a footnote in boxing history.

You can't be better than somebody that knocked your ass out and won the rematch.

so you're saying retaining your title against hopkins and wright in your first two matches are on par with retaining your title against rubio and lockett?

not to mention taylor's second loss to pavlik wasn't even at middleweight.

why did you even put taylor's label of champion in quotations? there's no dispute regarding his status as lineal champ.
