Middleweight Tournament: Quarter Final - Marvin Hagler vs Harry Greb

Greb's becoming a little too idolised.

Let us not forget that Hagler actually looked as near to perfect as is possible in some fights.

He was too well rounded to reveal any weakness that Greb might exploit. Outside, Hagler was on point. Inside, he'd at the very least make it even.

As always someone has posted something that summarised what I was trying to say far more efficiently than I can! (not saying you copied obviously just that this is more concise and to the point)

I'm going to agree. I think in a one off Greb might smother and pressure Hagler out of it. Mind you i am leery due to lack of footage. I am more going via his unreal record vs fighter we did actually see.

 

Wish there were some more footage of Greb, but from what I've heard, he was a whirlwind swarmer...not unlike a middleweight Fighting Harada. That said, I would have to go with Hagler via UD or TKO, who is rarely beaten in aggressiveness and who is a pretty good swarmer himself.

 

I have no problem picking Greb here.

Greb beat every type of fighter imaginible from lightweight to light heavyweight.

I am confident in saying that Hagler would not give him much that he had not seen before.

The fighters who beat Greb generaly used unorthodox tactics that were a big departure from their normal tactics.

If Hagler is going to beat Greb it is unlikley to be in their first meeting.

 

I just flipped a coin and it came up Hagler,

so Hagler will win because he did better at middleweight against other middleweights. Greb was actually, despite his great record against bigger men, sort of in and out against the smaller men. Hagler has more punching power, has a southpaw stance like Flowers which may bother Greb, and Greb does not have the power to keep Hagler honest. Anyway, Hagler won the coin flip.

 

Do you think Haglers switching to Orthodox stance (like he did to Ray Leonard) might be considered Unorthodox enough to throw off greb?

 

I think Greb takes the nod because he is a little to busy and keep Hagler confused....Marvin in the fight but a close nod for Harry, Marvin can not get his rythym

 

I pick Greb,I dont know how many soutpaws he faced , he lost to Flowers twice ,I read that one decision was debatable,but in any case Greb was slowing down by then.
Hagler was nigh on the perfect 160 pounder, he had a wide variety of punches ,good punch placement,above average power,was very accurate,,allways in top shape ,terrific balance,a great desire, courage and was phenomenally durable.He had fine boxing ability,knew when to apply pressure and was an excellent finisher when he had you hurt.
Weaknesses? well, were there any?
I think he was bothered by speed,and could underperform on occasion,eg Antuofermo 1 and Duran.
Antuofermo applied constant pressure ,he had little power and was small in stature ,yet he got a draw albeit maybe a favourable one.
A past prime Duran bluffed and conned his way to a reasonably close decision,in a fight I think Hagler could have dominated.
Hagler looked a little uncomfortable with Duran's speed,even a fading Duran still had the excellent head movement and smarts, with smoke and mirrors he parlayed this into a decision fight.
A slowing Hagler was often uncharacteristically reaching with his punches against a surprisingly fleet Leonard, this allayed to a woefully laid back corner cost him the decision against SRL.

Hagler beat some great fighters but some of them were coming up in weight.

Greb beat some great fighters who were naturally bigger than himself.

Greb had wonderful powers of endurance, no -one was superior in this department, and only Armstrong comes close Loughran called him a freak.
Greb was super fast a perpeptual motion guy.
Greb had a great chin, maybe less than Hagler's but great all the same ,and it was tested against heavyweights.

Greb did not display terrific power, though Tunney said he could hit pretty good,he just did not set himself to punch preferring to be in constant forward motion.
Hagler looks just about the composite middleweight in his best fights.
Good judges like Mickey Duff who saw every middle from Robinson to now, rate Hagler the best and stated he would have beaten Robinson.
Lack of film must hurt Greb , but his record is so stellar and many of his opponents ARE on film so we have a form line.
I take Greb by U DEC. because of his speed and durability.I think Hagler would have dificulty landing his jab and timing his follow up shots as Harry swarms in under his leads.
In a trio of fights Hagler would win at least on imo ,but NOT the first one.

Sorry for the lengthy post but it was my way of weighing up the fight in my own head.

 

Old video's of greb slow him down. From different weights I pick grebat 160 I'm going with bad to the bone Hagler.

Well as far as no film goes, Ray Arcel said in Boxing Illustrated article Hagler vs the all time greats
Greb all the way!!
And I doubt Ray ever saw the two eyed Greb neither.

 

Hagler has a better shot in a rematch. Hagler was somewhat taken aback by the presence of Duran -- Greb had a knack for overhwhelming his opposition in general, but his awkward and unusual style was especially hard to overcome the first time.

Greb by a somewhat close decision that make the match seem more competitive than it was. Despite winning rounds, Hagler never looked truly "in the fight", and when he tried to bull in desperation, he was outhustled.

Tiger Flowers was a switch hitter though I am not certain how important that was to the outcome of their series.
