For some reason or another HBO has been over paying Berto for his fights for the last 3 yrs ... I just read on ESPN.com on Rafael's blog, that HBO has created a false market for Berto and in turn, has turned him into a fighter who doesn't deserve the purses he's getting and probably will be pricing himself out of some pretty good fights.

He was offered less money for (3) good fights; Shane Mosley, Issac Hlatshwayo, and Luis Collazo ... 2 of the 3 were unification fights, and if he were to fight and win, that would set him up for some bigger fights in the future. I can tell you this, no matter what i'm making, if I have a chance to have a future hall of famer on my resume and a chance to gain another world title then i'll be game for that. We're not talkinga bout change either, its six figures.

What do you guys think of this?

Bad business decisions by HBO, as per the course so far this year.

Let's hope they pony up for Adamek-Hopkins in the next month.

HBO has contributed to, if not made, the difficult situation boxing finds itself in today.

Hyping and "making" fighters bigger than they really are. Jumping the gun on them before they have even proved themselves, makes it hard to have the best fights.

I agree. It makes no sense for Berto at this stage not to try to fight Shane. I understand why he wants no part of Collazo, he knows he lost.

for some reason HBo often will give al haymon (Berto's advisor) what he wants. an investigation might or might not yield something interesting.

No wonder they gave him the decision over Collazo.

Rafael is on point. HBO has been desperately trying to find a new cash crop fighter to replace DLH since his career started to taper off, and they have thrown a lot of money towards Berto, did the same thing with Taylor as well.

It hasnt really gone anywhere. Berto hasnt developed much of a fanbase, and HBO cant pony up 2 million for every single fight. He still hasnt reached the elite level of sport, as far as prominence goes. And in his big litmus test fight against Collazo he barely won. I personally thought he lost actually.

And he'll never reach that level, Berto is what he is. HBO should be smart and should stop spoiling Berto and stop wasting money on him, once he fights
a top welter he'll be KTFO.

They are trying to manuacture Berto into a great fighter. but that's not how you do it.

all the money and smart business decisions can't buy you a great fighter, like they tried with Taylor (advised by haymon).

a great fighter is one who is so special and talented he can cultivate his own fan base, like Cotto, Adamek, Pacquiao. Unlike Berto, Taylor, Mayweather who don't have fan bases. they are talented but manufactured champs.

The netwroks are missing the boat on Adamek too, he sold out an arena in NJ vs. Bobby Gunn.

i don't know man. that has a lot to do with it, but these guys are also winning over fans left and right because of their exciting styles/fights and they're two of the best in the world. they're true athletes who just want to fight and don't talk a whole lot of ****. that earns more fans than you think.

obviously neither are as big as mayweather because neither have been lineal champions in multiple weight classes nor reigning p4p #1 for years. mayweather is the best fighter of this decade (many will argue pac as well, but that's beside the point) and he has been hyped accordingly. you can't say that for cotto or adamek.
